The plug is stuck in your car and you cannot remove it

Your charging session is done but the connector will not come out of the car. This is usually a locking mechanism issue, not a physical defect. There are several ways to release it.

Charging has finished or you want to stop the session, but the connector will not detach from your car. The plug feels locked in place.

What to try first

  1. 1

    End the charging session first

The connector locks while charging is active. Stop the session from the charger screen, your car's touchscreen, or the charging app. Wait a few seconds for the lock to disengage.

  2. 2

    Unlock from your car

Most EVs have a charge port unlock button on the touchscreen, in the app, or on the key fob. Try all three. On some cars, locking and unlocking the doors also releases the charge port.

  3. 3

Check your owner's manual for an emergency release

Many EVs have a manual emergency release for the charge port. The location and method vary by manufacturer. Check your owner's manual for instructions specific to your car. If you cannot find it or the cable still will not release, contact roadside assistance.
