Your situation

Illustration of Tom, a fictional EV driver in this scenario

You need to plug in your car but the charge port door or flap will not open when you press it, use the button, or try the app.

What to try first

  1. 1

    Try all the unlock methods

Most EVs have multiple ways to open the charge port: pressing the door itself, a button inside the car, the key fob, or the car's app. Try each one. Some cars require the vehicle to be unlocked first.

  2. 2

Check if it is frozen (cold weather)

In winter, ice can freeze the charge port door shut. Never force it open. Use your car's preconditioning or cabin heater to warm the area, or try a commercial de-icer spray designed for vehicles. Check your owner's manual for cold-weather charging advice.

  3. 3

Check your owner's manual for a manual release

Many EVs have an emergency manual release for the charge port. The location varies by manufacturer. Check your owner's manual for instructions. If the port still will not open, contact roadside assistance.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my EV charge port frozen shut?

Water gets into the charge port seam and freezes in cold weather. This is common in temperatures below 0°C. Prevent it by parking in a garage, or pre-warming the car before charging. To fix it, use the car's preconditioning feature or a commercial de-icer spray. Never use force. Check your owner's manual for the recommended approach.

How do I manually open a stuck EV charge port?

Many EVs have an emergency manual release mechanism. The location and method vary by manufacturer. Check your owner's manual for instructions specific to your car. If you cannot find it, contact roadside assistance.
