EV Charging in Belgium
Updated March 2026
Belgium has a strong company car culture that is driving rapid EV adoption. From 2026, only zero-emission vehicles are fully tax-deductible as company cars, which means the charging network is expanding quickly. Motorway fast-charging coverage is good, with Ionity, Fastned, Allego, and TotalEnergies all present. Belgium is compact and well-positioned as a transit country between France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
EV charging infrastructure changes quickly. Networks expand, pricing updates, apps change, and new chargers appear regularly. The information on this page reflects general conditions as of early 2026, but always verify details with the charging network before you travel.

Practical Tips
- Shell Recharge and Plugsurfing offer the widest roaming coverage across Belgian chargers.
- Fastned has multiple stations along Belgian highways with reliable high-power chargers and good facilities.
- Belgium has three regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels) that sometimes have different charging infrastructure providers. Coverage is generally better in Flanders.
- TotalEnergies operates fast chargers at many fuel stations along Belgian autoroutes.
- Electra is expanding in Belgium with ultra-fast hubs near retail locations.
- For transit through Belgium (common on trips between the Netherlands and France), plan one charging stop along the E19 or E40.
How to Pay
Most Belgian chargers accept app-based payment and RFID cards. Shell Recharge, Plugsurfing, and DKV cards offer broad roaming coverage. Contactless bank card payment is available at Fastned, Ionity, and TotalEnergies stations. The variety of networks means no single app covers everything. Having two payment methods is recommended.
Recommended roaming cards
A roaming card lets you charge across multiple networks with one account. In Belgium, the most useful are:
- Shell Recharge
- Plugsurfing
- DKV
Charging Costs
- Average DC fast charging
- ~€0.6/kWh
- Average home electricity
- ~€0.36/kWh
- DC vs. home ratio
- 1.7x more expensive
Prices are approximate averages including 21% VAT. Actual costs vary by network, time of day, and subscription plans.
Home charging is significantly cheaper than public DC fast charging in Belgium. If you have access to a home charger or workplace charging, use it for daily needs and save DC fast charging for road trips.
EV Incentives for Businesses
From 2026, only zero-emission vehicles are 100% tax-deductible as company cars. Strong incentive driving fleet electrification.
Tax incentives change frequently. Verify current rates with your local tax authority.
Road Trips
Belgium is small enough that you can cross the entire country on a single charge in most modern EVs. For transit trips, the E40 (Ostend to Liege), E19 (Antwerp to Brussels), and E411 (Brussels to Luxembourg) all have fast chargers. Traffic congestion around Brussels and Antwerp is common and can increase energy consumption. If heading to the Ardennes, charging options thin out in the more rural south.
Useful Apps
Download these before you travel. Having the right apps installed saves time at the charger.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not assume Wallonia has the same charger density as Flanders. Southern Belgium has fewer options, especially in rural areas.
- Do not plan a tight schedule through Belgium during rush hour. Traffic around Brussels and Antwerp can add significant time and drain your battery.
- Do not forget to check the payment method before plugging in. Belgian chargers use a variety of backends and not all cards work everywhere.
- Do not ignore the Ardennes region when planning. If heading to southern Belgium or Luxembourg, charge before leaving the motorway network.
Good to Know
- Belgium's company car tax rules are among the most EV-friendly in Europe, leading to a high share of electric company cars on the road.
- Parking in Belgian city centers is often expensive, but some municipalities offer reduced or free parking for EVs.
- Language varies by region. Charger screens may default to Dutch (Flanders), French (Wallonia), or both.
- Belgian motorways (autoroutes/autosnelwegen) are famously well-lit at night but can be congested during rush hours.
