Car Won't Start After Charging
Charging finished but now your car will not turn on or drive
Your car charged fine but now it will not start, shows a warning, or is unresponsive. This is rare but not as scary as it sounds. Here is what to check.
Your situation
Your car was plugged in and charging completed successfully, but now it will not turn on, shows a blank dashboard, or gives an error when you try to drive.
What to try first
- 1
Check if the charging cable is still locked in
Some cars will not enter drive mode while the cable is connected. Make sure the session has ended and the cable is fully removed. If it is stuck, see the connector release guide.
- 2
Check the 12V battery
EVs have a small 12V battery that powers the electronics (dashboard, locks, computers). If this battery is dead, the car will not turn on even if the main battery is full. Try opening and closing the door, or pressing the brake and start button firmly.
- 3
Try a full system restart
Hold the start button for 10-15 seconds to force a restart on most EVs. Some cars (like Tesla) have a specific two-button restart sequence. Check your owner's manual. This clears software glitches that can occur after charging.

Frequently asked questions
Can charging damage my EV?
Normal charging (AC or DC) does not damage your car. The battery management system controls everything automatically. If your car will not start after charging, it is almost always a 12V battery issue or a software glitch, not damage from the charging session.
What should I do if my EV is completely unresponsive?
If nothing works (no dashboard, no lights, no response to key fob), the 12V battery is likely dead. Call roadside assistance. They can jump-start the 12V battery, which will bring the car's electronics back online. The main drive battery is separate and is probably fine.
