EV Charger Error

Battery Too Cold to Charge

Updated March 2026

Share

This is general guidance based on the ChargeX MREC standard. Actual charger behavior varies by manufacturer and firmware version. Always follow on-screen instructions and contact the charging network if you are unsure.

Warning

Your vehicle's battery is too cold to accept a charge, especially at high speed. The battery management system limits or blocks charging to prevent damage to the cells. This is common in winter.

What to do

  1. If you are DC fast charging, the car may need time to warm the battery. Wait and retry
  2. Drive for 10 to 15 minutes before charging. Driving warms the battery naturally
  3. Use your car's pre-conditioning feature if it has one. Some cars can warm the battery when you navigate to a charger
  4. AC (slow) charging may still work at a reduced rate while the battery warms up
