What does BMS (Battery Management System) mean?

Explanation

The battery management system is the brain of your EV's battery pack. It monitors every cell's voltage, temperature, and current flow, then adjusts charging speed, discharge rate, and thermal management to keep everything within safe limits. When your charging speed drops at high SoC, that is the BMS reducing power to protect the cells.

The BMS is responsible for the charging curve you see during a fast charge. It decides how fast to ramp up, when to start tapering, and when to stop charging entirely. It also manages cell balancing, making sure all cells in the pack charge and discharge evenly, which is important for long-term battery health.

You never interact with the BMS directly, but it affects your experience constantly. If the battery is cold, the BMS limits charging power until the cells warm up. If the battery is too hot after aggressive driving, the BMS may reduce both charging and driving power. Car manufacturers regularly update BMS software through over-the-air updates, sometimes improving charging speeds or refining the charging curve.

Common confusion

When charging is slow, drivers often blame the charger. In many cases, it is the BMS limiting power because the battery is too cold, too hot, or too full. The BMS always has the final say on charging speed.
