Using an Unfamiliar Charging Network

You are at a charger brand you have never used before

Every charging network has slightly different apps, payment methods, and procedures. Here is how to handle a new network without stress.

Your situation

Tom

You need to charge but the only available charger is from a network you have never used. You do not have their app and are not sure how to start.

What to try first

  1. 1

Look for contactless payment on the charger

Many newer chargers accept contactless credit cards or phone payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay). Look for the contactless symbol on the charger. This is the fastest way to start without downloading anything.

  2. 2

Check if your existing app supports roaming

Apps like Plugsurfing, Shell Recharge, and others support roaming across multiple networks. Open your usual charging app and search for the charger. It may already work through a roaming agreement, though prices may be slightly higher.

  3. 3

Download the network's own app as a backup

If contactless and roaming do not work, download the charger's app (the name is usually printed on the charger). Sign up takes a few minutes. Add a payment method and start the session from the app.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different app for every charging network?

Not necessarily. Roaming apps can access multiple networks from one account. But roaming sometimes costs more, and not every network participates. Having 2-3 apps from the biggest networks in your area covers most situations.

What if the charger has no contactless payment and the app does not work?

Some older chargers only accept their own RFID card or app. If you cannot get the app working (poor signal, payment issues), look for another charger. In the EU, newer installations are increasingly required to support direct card payment.
