EV Charger Error

Charging Cable Not Recognized (VW/Audi/Skoda)

Updated March 2026

Share

This is general guidance based on the ChargeX MREC standard. Actual charger behavior varies by manufacturer and firmware version. Always follow on-screen instructions and contact the charging network if you are unsure.

Warning

Your Volkswagen Group vehicle (VW, Audi, Skoda, CUPRA) does not recognize the charging cable. This is common with certain Type 2 AC cables and can also happen at DC chargers.

What to do

  1. Unplug and re-insert the connector firmly. Make sure it clicks into place
  2. If using your own portable AC cable, try the charger's built-in cable instead
  3. Lock and unlock the vehicle. VW Group cars sometimes need a lock cycle to reset the charge port
  4. Check if the charge port light is flashing. A steady light usually means the cable is recognized
  5. Try a different charger. Some older cables have compatibility issues with newer VW Group cars

Who's responsible?

  • This may be something you can fix yourself
