This is general guidance based on the ChargeX MREC standard. Actual charger behavior varies by manufacturer and firmware version. Always follow on-screen instructions and contact the charging network if you are unsure.

Critical

Your BMW is displaying a charging system malfunction warning. This can be caused by a fault in the vehicle's onboard charger, the charge port, or a communication issue with the external charger.

What to do

  1. Try a different charger to see if the error follows your vehicle
  2. Restart your BMW (turn off, wait 2 minutes, turn on) and try again
  3. Check if the charge port is clean and free of debris
  4. If the error persists across multiple chargers, contact BMW service. The onboard charger may need diagnosis
  5. Check for software updates in BMW Connected or My BMW app
