EV Charging in Sweden
Updated March 2026
Sweden has a strong and growing EV charging network, supported by clean electricity from hydro and nuclear power. Major highways have reliable fast-charging coverage, and domestic networks like Mer and Vattenfall InCharge complement the pan-European operators. Charging prices are competitive thanks to relatively low electricity costs.
EV charging infrastructure changes quickly. Networks expand, pricing updates, apps change, and new chargers appear regularly. The information on this page reflects general conditions as of early 2026, but always verify details with the charging network before you travel.

Practical Tips
- Mer and Vattenfall InCharge are the largest domestic networks. Download at least one of their apps before your trip.
- E-roads (E4, E6, E18, E20) have the best fast-charging coverage. If your route follows a major E-road, you will find chargers at regular intervals.
- Winter in Sweden means cold temperatures that affect battery performance. Precondition your battery before fast charging and expect 20-30% range reduction.
- Many Swedish fuel stations (Circle K, OKQ8, Preem) are adding fast chargers alongside traditional pumps.
- Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö have good urban charging infrastructure with both AC and DC options.
- If driving from Stockholm to Gothenburg (E4/E20), the route is well served with multiple fast-charging stops.
How to Pay
Swedish chargers accept app-based payment and RFID cards. Contactless bank card payment is available at Ionity and some newer stations. Shell Recharge and Plugsurfing offer good roaming coverage. Prices are typically shown in SEK (approximately 5 to 7 SEK per kWh for DC fast charging). Some older chargers may require a specific app, so having multiple payment options is recommended.
Recommended roaming cards
A roaming card lets you charge across multiple networks with one account. In Sweden, the most useful are:

Charging Costs
- Average DC fast charging
- ~€0.53/kWh (7.5 SEK)
- Average home electricity
- ~€0.15/kWh
- DC vs. home ratio
- 3.5x more expensive
Prices are approximate averages including 25% VAT. Actual costs vary by network, time of day, and subscription plans.
Home charging is significantly cheaper than public DC fast charging in Sweden. If you have access to a home charger or workplace charging, use it for daily needs and save DC fast charging for road trips.
EV Incentives for Businesses
Lower benefit value for EVs. Reduced road tax for zero-emission vehicles.
Tax incentives change frequently. Verify current rates with your local tax authority.
Road Trips
Long-distance driving in Sweden is manageable along major E-roads. The E4 from Malmö to Stockholm is well covered. Heading further north toward Umeå and Luleå, charger spacing increases but coverage exists. For trips to Norwegian fjords via mountain passes, charge fully before crossing. The flat terrain in southern Sweden is great for range efficiency.
Useful Apps
Download these before you travel. Having the right apps installed saves time at the charger.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not underestimate distances in northern Sweden. The country is long, and charger density decreases as you head north.
- Do not skip preconditioning in winter. Swedish winters are cold, and a warm battery charges significantly faster.
- Do not assume all rural fuel stations have EV chargers. Check in advance if you are leaving the main highways.
- Do not forget that Sweden uses SEK, not EUR. Check the exchange rate when comparing charging prices.
Good to Know
- Swedish electricity is among the cleanest in Europe. Charging your EV here is genuinely low-carbon.
- Some apartment buildings and hotels in Sweden have shared charging solutions. Ask about access before arrival.
- Sweden and Norway share a long border with several crossing points. Chargers on both sides are usually compatible with the same apps.
- In northern Sweden, distances between chargers can be significant. Plan extra margin when driving above the Arctic Circle.
