Ford E-Transit for Municipal and Public Sector

Updated March 2026

The Ford E-Transit is the largest electric van option for municipal fleets that need serious cargo capacity. With 1,616 kg payload and 250 km WLTP rated range, it handles heavy-duty tasks like waste collection support, equipment transport, and facility maintenance. Drivers tell us the familiar Transit layout makes driver training minimal.

Why the Ford E-Transit?

  • 1,616 kg payload handles the heaviest municipal loads including tools, materials, and equipment
  • 250 km range comfortably exceeds the 80 km daily requirement with room for detours
  • Multiple body configurations (panel van, chassis cab) suit different municipal applications
  • Familiar Ford Transit layout minimizes transition time for existing Transit drivers

Key Specifications

Battery (useable) 68 kWh
WLTP range 317 km
Consumption 272 Wh/km
Max DC charging 115 kW
DC charge (10-80%) ~41 min
AC full charge (11 kW) ~6.2 h
Payload 1616 kg

Charging Strategy for Municipal and Public Sector

Charge overnight at the depot on an 11 kW or 22 kW AC charger. An 80 km day uses about 22 kWh, which takes roughly two hours at 11 kW. The 250 km range provides excellent buffer for unplanned trips. For heavier loads, expect slightly higher consumption, but daily routes remain well within range.

Overnight AC charging (recommended)

Plugging in at a depot or home charger (7-22 kW) overnight fully replenishes the battery. At 11 kW, the Ford E-Transit charges from empty in approximately 6.2 hours, easily done overnight. For faster turnaround, a 22 kW charger is recommended.

Mid-day DC top-up

If overnight charging is not available, a DC fast charge during a break can add enough range. At 115 kW peak, the Ford E-Transit charges from 10% to 80% in roughly 41 minutes.

Running Costs: EV vs. Diesel

EV monthly fuel cost

Diesel monthly fuel cost

€209

Estimated monthly savings

€152/month

Based on 80 km/day, 22 working days/month. EV: 272 Wh/km at EUR 0.12/kWh (home charging). ICE: 7 L/100 km at EUR 1.70/L.

Practical Tips

  • Heavy loads increase consumption, so track actual Wh/km for different use cases to refine cost projections
  • A 22 kW depot charger is recommended due to the larger battery and higher daily energy use
  • The Pro Power Onboard feature can power tools and equipment at job sites, replacing a separate generator
  • Request the panel van or chassis cab configuration based on your specific department needs

Operational Notes

The E-Transit's 250 km range and 1,616 kg payload make it the most capable option for heavy municipal work. Range is more than triple the daily 80 km requirement. Overnight depot charging easily covers daily use.
