EV Charger Error

Charge Port Locked (Cannot Remove Cable)

Updated March 2026

Share

This is general guidance based on the ChargeX MREC standard. Actual charger behavior varies by manufacturer and firmware version. Always follow on-screen instructions and contact the charging network if you are unsure.

Warning

The charging cable is locked in your vehicle's charge port and you cannot remove it. This is normal during active charging but can become a problem if the session ends and the lock does not release.

What to do

  1. Make sure the charging session has fully ended in the charger and your car
  2. Try unlocking your vehicle with the key fob or app. Many cars release the cable when unlocked
  3. Check your vehicle's manual for an emergency cable release (often a small pull tab in the trunk or near the port)
  4. Do not force the cable out. You can damage the connector or your charge port

Who's responsible?

  • This may be a vehicle issue
  • This may be something you can fix yourself
