Winter Range
Volvo EX40 Winter Range
Updated March 2026
The Volvo EX40 has a standard heat pump and preconditioning that help it perform well in cold weather. Drivers using our app report that its 79 kWh battery and 400 km range provide a comfortable winter buffer. At -10C, expect about 20% range reduction, leaving roughly 320 km of WLTP rated range. In cold weather, expect roughly 420 km at -10°C, a loss of about 27%. These are estimates and your actual range will vary. Check your vehicle's manual for exact specifications.

Maximizing Winter Range
- Precondition the EX40 via the Volvo app while plugged in. This warms the cabin and battery from grid power, ensuring you start with full range and a battery ready for optimal performance.
- The EX40's heated seats, steering wheel, and windshield are more energy-efficient than the cabin heater. Use them as your first line of comfort in cold weather.
- Keep the EX40 plugged in when parked outdoors in freezing conditions. Maintaining battery temperature prevents cold-soak and keeps the 200 kW DC charging speed available when you need it.
- Use the car's navigation to route to fast chargers. The EX40 can preheat its battery en route, ensuring you arrive at the right temperature for peak 200 kW charging, even in winter.
- In very cold conditions (below -20C), expect about 28% range loss. With the 79 kWh battery, that still leaves roughly 290 km. Charge more frequently and keep the battery above 20% for best cold-weather performance.
