The BMW iX has a standard heat pump and preconditioning, which help offset the range impact of its large SUV body in cold weather. With a 71 kWh battery and 405 km rated range, expect around 290-325 km in mild cold and 260-290 km in severe cold. Based on what our users tell us, the iX's winter range is manageable with good habits, but its tall profile means cold weather has a noticeable effect. In cold weather, expect roughly 310 km at -10°C, a loss of about 27%. These are estimates and your actual range will vary. Check your vehicle's manual for exact specifications.

Maximizing Winter Range

  • Precondition the iX through the BMW app while plugged in. The iX has a spacious cabin that takes more energy to heat, so warming it on grid power saves meaningful battery range.
  • The iX's standard heat pump handles cabin heating efficiently, but the large interior means it works harder than in a sedan. Use the zone climate feature to heat only occupied seats, and rely on heated seats for personal warmth.
  • Set your winter charge limit to 90%. The iX's 71 kWh battery benefits from the extra buffer, giving you about 290 km even in mild cold.
  • The iX's tall SUV shape increases aerodynamic drag, which is worse in cold, denser winter air. Reduce highway speed by 10-15 km/h in cold weather to offset this effect on range.
  • Before DC fast charging in winter, let the iX precondition the battery via navigation routing. A warm battery charges faster and accepts more power, getting you back on the road sooner.
