Winter Range

Tesla Model Y Winter Range

Updated March 2026

The Tesla Model Y performs reliably in winter with its standard heat pump and battery preconditioning. With a 75 kWh battery and 455 km rated range, expect around 325-365 km in mild cold and 290-330 km in severe cold. Drivers using our app report that the Model Y's larger battery provides a comfortable winter buffer compared to smaller EVs. In cold weather, expect roughly 428 km at -10°C, a loss of about 27%. These are estimates and your actual range will vary. Check your vehicle's manual for exact specifications.

Maximizing Winter Range

  • Precondition the car through the Tesla app while still plugged in. The Model Y's heat pump warms the cabin efficiently, and preconditioning the battery using grid power means you start with full range and a warm battery.
  • Use seat heaters and the heated steering wheel as your primary warmth sources. They use far less energy than heating the entire cabin to a high temperature, which matters more in a taller SUV like the Model Y.
  • Set your charge limit to 90% in winter months. The Model Y's 75 kWh battery at 90% still gives you plenty of range, and the buffer helps compensate for increased cold-weather consumption.
  • When navigating to a Supercharger in cold weather, the Model Y automatically preconditions the battery en route. Use the built-in navigation even if you know the way, so the battery arrives warm and ready to charge at full speed.
  • Keep the Model Y in a garage overnight if possible. Even an unheated garage keeps the battery several degrees warmer than outside air, which reduces the energy needed to warm the battery in the morning.
