Winter Range
Volkswagen ID.4 Winter Range
Updated March 2026
The Volkswagen ID.4's winter range depends on whether your version includes the optional heat pump. With a 77 kWh battery and 445 km rated range, expect around 320-355 km in mild cold with a heat pump, or 285-330 km without one. Based on what our users tell us, the ID.4's larger battery provides a more comfortable winter buffer than smaller EVs in the VW lineup. In cold weather, expect roughly 418 km at -10°C, a loss of about 27%. These are estimates and your actual range will vary. Check your vehicle's manual for exact specifications.

Maximizing Winter Range
- Precondition the ID.4 through the We Connect app while it is still plugged in. This warms both the cabin and battery on grid power, preserving your full charge for driving.
- If your ID.4 has the optional heat pump, cabin heating uses significantly less energy. Without it, keep the cabin temperature moderate and use seat heaters as your primary warmth source.
- Set your winter charge limit to 90%. The ID.4's 77 kWh battery at 90% still provides over 320 km with a heat pump, even accounting for cold-weather losses.
- The ID.4's DC fast charging (up to 175 kW) is sensitive to battery temperature. In cold weather, drive for at least 15 minutes before stopping at a fast charger, or use the preconditioning feature to warm the battery en route.
- The ID.4 is an SUV with a taller profile, which means more air resistance. In winter, reduce highway speed slightly to counteract the combined effect of cold air and aerodynamic drag on range.
