Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The Ford Mustang Mach-E supports up to 150 kW DC charging. Atlante chargers deliver up to 300 kW. Your car's maximum intake is the limiting factor here, capping speed at 150 kW even on a faster charger.

  • Charging slows down above 80% state of charge on most EVs, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
  • Cold weather reduces charging speed. The Ford Mustang Mach-E supports battery preconditioning, which helps.
  • If multiple cars share the same Atlante station, power may be split between stalls.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Charging Problems

Ford Mustang Mach-E Plugged In but Charger Will Not Start

You plugged the cable into your Mustang Mach-E and the charger is not responding. No animation on the SYNC 4A screen, the charger shows an error, or the charge port on the left front fender will not accept the connector. This happens more often than you would think and is usually a quick fix.

Symptoms

  • Charger displays an error or flashing red indicator after plugging in
  • Charge port LED on the left front fender does not light up
  • SYNC 4A screen shows no active charging session
  • Charger says 'waiting for vehicle' and eventually times out
  • CCS connector plugs in but does not lock into the charge port

What to Do

  1. 1

    Authenticate with the charger

Check the charger's screen for payment instructions. Tap your RFID card, use the charger's app, or try contactless payment. On BlueOval Charge Network stations, Plug & Charge may work automatically if set up in FordPass.

  2. 2

    Open the charge port properly

Press the button on the charge port door on the left front fender. If frozen in cold weather, try pressing firmly or warming the area with your hand. Do not use tools that could damage the door mechanism.

  3. 3

    Seat the connector firmly

Push the CCS2 connector straight into the port until it clicks and locks. The charge port is on the left front fender, so make sure you park with the correct side facing the charger.

  4. 4

    Turn off departure-based charging

On the SYNC 4A screen, go to vehicle settings and check for departure-based or scheduled charging. Disable it to allow immediate charging at public stations.

  5. 5

    Restart the charging process

Unplug the connector, lock the car with FordPass or the key fob, wait 30 seconds, unlock, and plug in again. This resets the charging communication between the car and charger.

  6. 6

    Try a different charger

If the charger still will not start, move to a different stall or station. Use the FordPass app to find nearby BlueOval Charge Network stations or other compatible chargers.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Charger Payment Failed or Declined

You are at a charger with your Mustang Mach-E and the payment will not go through. Your card is declined, the FordPass app throws an error, or you cannot figure out how to pay at this particular charger. Payment problems are one of the most frustrating parts of public charging, and they are almost never the car's fault.

Symptoms

  • Charger screen shows 'payment failed' or 'card declined'
  • FordPass app shows a payment or session error
  • BlueOval Charge Network activation does not work
  • Contactless payment terminal does not respond to your card or phone
  • No obvious way to pay at the charger

What to Do

  1. 1

Try Plug & Charge or FordPass activation

If the charger is part of the BlueOval Charge Network, try activating the session through FordPass. If Plug & Charge is set up, unplug and replug the connector. Make sure FordPass has a valid payment method on file.

  2. 2

    Try a different payment method

Use a different bank card, your phone's mobile wallet, or the charging network's own app. Having multiple payment options is essential for public charging.

  3. 3

Check your bank for pre-authorization holds

Open your banking app and look for pending charges. Failed charging attempts may have placed holds that reduce your available balance. Contact your bank to release them if necessary.

  4. 4

    Download the charger network's app

Look at the charger for the network name. Download their app, create an account, add payment details, and start the session directly. This bypasses any issues with the physical payment terminal.

  5. 5

    Use an RFID charging card

If you have an RFID card from a charging provider or roaming service, tap it on the charger's reader. RFID cards are often more reliable than apps or contactless terminals and work across multiple networks.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Charging Slower Than Expected Fix

You plugged in your Mustang Mach-E expecting 150 kW and the 15.5-inch SYNC 4A screen shows 40 kW. Or your wallbox at home only delivers 3 kW instead of 11 kW. The Mach-E's charging speed depends heavily on battery temperature, state of charge, and the charger hardware. Most slow charging is fixable without a dealer visit.

Symptoms

  • DC fast charging speed well below the 150 kW maximum
  • AC home charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of 11 kW
  • Charging speed drops sharply after reaching 50-60%
  • SYNC 4A display shows lower power than the charger's rated output
  • Charging starts at reasonable speed but drops within a few minutes

What to Do

  1. 1

Precondition the battery before arriving at a charger

Use the FordPass app to start preconditioning, or set the charger as your destination in the Mach-E's navigation. The car will warm the battery during the drive to reach optimal charging temperature.

  2. 2

    Check your state of charge

For fastest DC charging, arrive at the charger between 10-20%. The Mach-E's peak charging speed is available in this range. Above 80%, expect significantly slower speeds.

  3. 3

Verify the charger is not sharing power

Check if the charger has two cables and if someone is using the adjacent stall. If power is being shared, try a charger with both stalls free for full speed.

  4. 4

Check the AC charge schedule and current limit

In the SYNC 4A settings on the 15.5-inch screen, check if a charge current limit is set or if departure-based charging is interfering. Make sure the car is set to charge immediately if you need power now.

  5. 5

    Try a different charger

If the charging speed is still lower than expected, the charger itself may be degraded. Try a different stall or a different station. Use the FordPass app or the BlueOval Charge Network to find alternatives.

  6. 6

    Check for software updates

Ford has released several over-the-air updates that improve charging performance on the Mach-E. Check SYNC 4A for pending updates or use the FordPass app to see if an update is available.

Common Atlante Issues

New station with teething problems

Atlante is expanding rapidly, and many stations are brand new. Newly installed chargers sometimes have firmware bugs, incomplete network configuration, or hardware that has not been fully tested under real-world conditions.

Symptoms

  • Charger turns on but fails to communicate with your vehicle
  • Session starts but drops after a few seconds
  • Charger screen shows an error code you have never seen before
  • Station appears on the map but the chargers are not yet operational

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Try a different charger at the same station

New stations often have multiple units and the issue may be limited to one charger. Try another unit before giving up on the location.

  2. 2

Unplug, wait 30 seconds, and retry

New charger firmware sometimes fails on the first handshake but succeeds on the second attempt. A short wait lets the charger reset its session state.

  3. 3

Start the session through the Atlante app

If the charger's screen or contactless reader is not working properly, the app provides a separate communication path to the charger's backend. This can bypass local hardware issues.

  4. 4

Check the Atlante app for station status notes

Atlante sometimes posts notices about newly activated stations that are still in testing. The station detail page in the app may show a note about limited functionality.

  5. 5

Report the issue and move to the next station

Use the Atlante app to report the problem. New station issues are usually fixed quickly once reported. Check the app for the nearest alternative Atlante or competitor station.

App crashes on older phones

The Atlante app can be unstable on older phones or phones running outdated operating systems. The app may crash during login, while loading the map, or in the middle of starting a session.

Symptoms

  • App closes unexpectedly when you open the station map
  • App freezes during the payment screen
  • Login screen loads but the app crashes after entering credentials
  • App works briefly but crashes when you try to start a session

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Update the Atlante app to the latest version

Atlante pushes frequent updates that fix stability issues. Open the App Store or Google Play and check for updates before your trip.

  2. 2

    Clear the app cache

On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Atlante, and clear the cache. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app. Corrupted cache data is a common cause of crashes.

  3. 3

Check your phone's operating system version

The Atlante app may require iOS 15+ or Android 10+. If your phone is on an older version, update if possible. If your phone cannot update, you may need a roaming app as a backup.

  4. 4

Use contactless payment as a fallback

If the app keeps crashing and the station supports contactless, tap your credit or debit card on the charger's payment terminal. Not all Atlante stations have this yet, but it completely bypasses the app.

  5. 5

    Try a roaming app

Apps like Chargemap, Shell Recharge, or Electropass can start sessions at Atlante stations without using the Atlante app. Check roaming coverage before relying on this.

Contactless payment terminal not activated

Atlante is rolling out contactless card payment across its network, but not every charger has an active terminal yet. Some units have the hardware installed but the payment function is not turned on.

Symptoms

  • Card reader is visible on the charger but does not respond to a tap
  • Screen says 'Use app to start' with no contactless option shown
  • Contactless symbol is printed on the charger but the reader light is off
  • You see a payment terminal but tapping produces no response

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Download and use the Atlante app

At stations where contactless is not yet active, the Atlante app is the primary payment method. Download it before your trip and add a payment card in advance.

  2. 2

Check the charger screen for payment instructions

Some Atlante chargers display which payment methods are currently available. If contactless is not listed, the terminal is not active at that unit.

  3. 3

Try a different charger at the same station

Contactless activation sometimes rolls out unit by unit. Another charger at the same station may have an active terminal.

  4. 4

Use a roaming RFID card or app

If you have an RFID card from a roaming provider, try tapping it. Some Atlante stations accept roaming RFID even when the contactless card terminal is not active.

Charger screen hard to read in direct sunlight

Some Atlante charger screens have low brightness levels that make them nearly impossible to read in bright sunlight. This is especially common at stations in Southern Europe during summer.

Symptoms

  • Screen content is barely visible outdoors during the day
  • You cannot read the price, status, or error messages on the screen
  • Screen appears to be off but the charger is actually on
  • You have to cup your hands around the screen to read it

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Use your body or hand to shade the screen

Stand to block direct sunlight from hitting the screen. Even partial shade can make the display readable.

  2. 2

Take a photo of the screen with your phone

Your phone camera can sometimes capture what your eyes cannot. Take a photo and zoom in to read the text.

  3. 3

Use the Atlante app to monitor your session

All session information (charging speed, energy delivered, cost, estimated time) is available in the app. You do not need the charger screen to track your session.

  4. 4

Start the session entirely through the app

If you cannot read the screen at all, use the Atlante app to select the charger, start the session, and stop it when done. This avoids needing to interact with the screen.

Cable connector requires specific angle to lock

Some Atlante charger cables need to be inserted at a particular angle or with extra force for the CCS2 connector to seat properly. If it is not fully locked, the session will not start.

Symptoms

  • Connector feels like it is in but the charger does not recognize it
  • Charger screen says 'Connect cable' even though the cable is plugged in
  • You hear a partial click but the connector is not locked
  • Connector slides back out after you let go

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Push the connector straight in, then slightly upward

Some Atlante CCS2 connectors need a slight upward tilt after the initial push to engage the locking mechanism. You should feel and hear a solid click.

  2. 2

Check for debris in the vehicle's charging port

Dust, ice, or a small pebble in the port can prevent the connector from seating fully. Inspect the port and brush out anything you find.

  3. 3

Make sure the vehicle is unlocked and ready to charge

Some vehicles lock the charging port flap or disable the inlet when the car is locked or in drive mode. Ensure the car is in park and unlocked.

  4. 4

Try a different cable if the charger has two

If the charger has two CCS2 cables, try the other one. One cable may have a slightly worn connector that does not seat as easily.

Atlante App Tips

  • Download the Atlante app and create an account before traveling to Southern Europe. Relying on contactless payment is risky since not all terminals are active yet.
  • Check station comments and ratings in the Atlante app. Because the network is new, other drivers often share useful notes about access, parking, or charger quirks.
  • Keep the Atlante app updated. As a new network, they release frequent fixes for stability and feature issues.
  • If the Atlante app crashes on your phone, have a backup roaming app (Chargemap or Shell Recharge) installed and ready to go.

Payment Tips

  • The Atlante app is currently the most reliable payment method across the network. Contactless card payment is expanding but not guaranteed at every station.
  • Add your payment card to the Atlante app before your trip. Setting up payment at the charger on a weak mobile connection is unreliable.
  • Atlante pricing is shown per kWh in the app before you start a session. Check the rate before plugging in, as prices can vary between locations.
  • If contactless payment fails, the Atlante app is your fallback. If the app also fails, try a roaming provider like Chargemap or Shell Recharge.
