Charging Strategy for Company Cars
Charge at home overnight on an 11 kW wallbox. A full charge takes about 7-8 hours. With 400 km range and a 60 km daily commute, weekly charging is plenty. For business trips, 200 kW DC fast charging is competitive, adding about 180 km in 15-20 minutes. The battery preconditions automatically for fast charging.
Overnight AC charging (recommended)
Plugging in at a depot or home charger (7-22 kW) overnight fully replenishes the battery. At 11 kW, the Volvo EX40 charges from empty in approximately 7.2 hours, easily done overnight.
Mid-day DC top-up
If overnight charging is not available, a DC fast charge during a break can add enough range. At 200 kW peak, the Volvo EX40 charges from 10% to 80% in roughly 28 minutes.

Practical Tips
- The EX40 has an NMC battery. Set the daily charge limit to 80% through the car's settings or the Volvo app.
- The standard heat pump helps maintain range in winter. Expect about 15-20% less range in cold weather, which is better than most competitors.
- 200 kW DC fast charging is strong for this segment. The EX40 charges faster than many competitors on business trips.
- The Volvo EX40 does not support Plug & Charge. Provide employees with a charging card or help them set up a charging app before their first business trip.
Operational Notes
The 400 km WLTP rated range is nearly seven times the typical 60 km daily commute. The EX40 fits the company car role well, especially for organizations that prioritize safety. Higher consumption at 198 Wh/km compared to some sedans is typical for a compact SUV. Business trips up to 350 km can be handled with a single fast charging stop.
