Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The Volkswagen ID.7 supports up to 190 kW DC charging. Badenova chargers deliver up to 200 kW. Your car's maximum intake is the limiting factor here, capping speed at 190 kW even on a faster charger.

  • Cold weather reduces charging speed. The Volkswagen ID.7 supports battery preconditioning, which helps.

Volkswagen ID.7 Charging Problems

Volkswagen ID.7 Charger Will Not Start a Session

You plugged your ID.7 into a charger and nothing is happening. The infotainment display shows no charging activity, and the charger is just sitting there. Whether you are at a DC fast charger or an AC destination charger, the ID.7 shares the same MEB platform quirks as the ID.4 and ID.3, plus a few things specific to the flagship sedan.

Symptoms

  • CCS2 connector plugged into the right rear charge port but the charger shows 'Waiting'
  • Infotainment display shows no charging animation or progress after connecting
  • Charger display says 'Authorization required' even after tapping your card
  • Charge port on the right rear does not show any LED indicator change
  • We Charge or Elli app shows the car as connected but not actively charging

What to Do

    Unplug and reseat the CCS2 connector

    Remove the connector from the right rear charge port completely. Wait five seconds. Push it back in firmly until you hear the latch click. Make sure both the Type 2 portion and the two DC pins below are fully engaged.

    Authorize the session manually

    Check the charger display for authorization prompts. Tap your RFID card, open the operator's app, or use contactless payment. Do not rely on Plug & Charge working unless you have confirmed it is active in the We Charge app.

    Disable scheduled charging

    On the ID.7's infotainment display, go to the charging settings. If a departure timer or scheduled charging is active, disable it or select 'Charge Now' to start immediately.

    Verify Plug & Charge in the We Charge app

    Open the We Charge or Elli app on your phone. Check that Plug & Charge is enabled and your payment method is current. If it was never activated, you will need to use manual authorization at every station.

    Restart the infotainment system

    Press and hold the power button on the infotainment display for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and reboots. This can resolve communication issues between the ID. Software and the charger. The car stays operational during the reboot.

    If the session still will not start, the charger may be faulted. Try a different connector at the same location or find a nearby station using the We Charge app or the ID.7's built-in charger finder.

Volkswagen ID.7 Payment Failed at Charging Station

You are at the charger, your ID.7 is plugged in, but the payment will not go through. The charger shows an error or just sits there waiting. Payment failures at public chargers are frustratingly common, and they almost never have anything to do with your car. Here is how to get past it and start charging.

  • Charger displays 'Payment failed' or 'Authorization error' after tapping your card
  • RFID card is not recognized by the charger reader
  • We Charge or Elli app shows an error when trying to start a remote session
  • Plug & Charge does not activate after plugging in the CCS2 connector on the right rear
  • Contactless payment terminal on the charger rejects your bank card

What to Do

    Try a different payment method

    If your RFID card failed, try contactless with your bank card or phone. If contactless failed, try the charger operator's app. Having at least two different payment options covers most failure scenarios.

    Check the We Charge or Elli app

    Open the We Charge or Elli app on your phone. Verify your account is active, your payment method is valid, and Plug & Charge is enabled. Try starting the session remotely through the app.

    Scan the charger QR code

    Most public chargers have a QR code. Scan it with your phone camera to open the operator's browser payment page. You can usually pay with a credit card directly without installing their app.

    Check your banking app for blocked transactions

    Open your banking app and look for flagged or declined payments. If the charging transaction was blocked, approve it and retry the payment at the charger.

    Try Plug & Charge by replugging

    If the charger supports Plug & Charge and your ID.7 has it activated through We Charge, unplug the CCS2 connector from the right rear charge port, wait a few seconds, and replug. Payment should authorize automatically through the cable.

    If nothing works, the charger's payment system may be down completely. Find a nearby alternative using the We Charge app or the ID.7's built-in charger finder on the infotainment display.

Volkswagen ID.7 Charging Slower Than Expected

You plugged in your ID.7 expecting 175 kW and the infotainment display shows 60 kW. Or your home wallbox is stuck at 3 kW instead of 11 kW. The ID.7 Pro has the fastest DC charging curve in VW's MEB lineup, but hitting peak speed depends on battery temperature, state of charge, and a few settings you can fix quickly.

Symptoms

  • DC fast charging power well below the 175 kW peak shown on the infotainment display
  • AC home charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of the expected 11 kW on 3-phase
  • Charging speed drops sharply after 50-55% during DC fast charging
  • Infotainment display shows a much longer estimated charge time than expected
  • Different CCS2 stations consistently deliver less power than the ID.7 should accept

What to Do

    Check if battery preconditioning was active

    On the infotainment display, look for battery temperature indicators. If the pack was cold when you arrived, enable preconditioning in the We Charge or Elli app for your next DC stop. Setting a navigation route to a fast charger should also trigger automatic preconditioning on the ID.7.

    Check your current state of charge

    If you are above 50%, the slower speed is expected on the 77 kWh NMC pack. For the fastest DC charging, arrive between 10-20%. The ID.7 Pro peaks between 10-35% and sustains higher power longer than the ID.3 or ID.4.

    Verify the charger is not sharing power

    Check if another car is plugged into the same charging station. Some DC stations split power between two stalls from a shared cabinet. If possible, move to a unit where no other car is connected.

    Check the AC charge current setting

    On the infotainment display, navigate to the charging settings. Look for the AC charge current or amperage limit and make sure it is set to maximum. This only affects AC charging at home or destination chargers.

    Try a different charger

    If speeds remain low, the charger hardware may be the bottleneck. Try a different station. Use the We Charge app or the ID.7's built-in charger finder to locate a charger rated at 175 kW or higher.

    Go to the settings menu on the infotainment display and check for ID. Software updates. VW has improved charging performance on MEB platform vehicles through software updates. The ID.7 launched with a refined charging curve compared to earlier MEB models.

Common Badenova Issues

App-only payment with no backup option at the charger

Badenova chargers require the Badenova app to start a session. There is no contactless card reader on the charger and no RFID option. If the app is not working, you cannot charge.

  • The charger has no contactless payment terminal or RFID reader
  • You do not have the Badenova app installed and cannot download it at the station
  • The app will not load or crashes when trying to start a session
  • You have no mobile data signal at the station and cannot use the app

How to Fix It

    Install and set up the Badenova app before you need it

    Download the Badenova app and create an account with a valid payment method before your first visit. Trying to set up an account at the station, possibly with poor signal, is a frustrating experience you can avoid.

    Try connecting to Wi-Fi if your mobile data is weak

    Some Badenova stations or nearby businesses may offer Wi-Fi. If your mobile data is too weak to load the app, look for available networks. Even a slow connection is enough to start a session.

    Restart the app or your phone

    If the app crashes or freezes, close it completely and reopen it. If that does not help, restart your phone. App-only chargers depend entirely on your phone working, so basic troubleshooting matters.

    Drive to an alternative charger with contactless payment

    If the app is genuinely broken or you have no signal, you need a charger that accepts contactless payment or RFID. Check another charging app (Ionity, EnBW mobility+, or a roaming app) for the nearest alternative station. This is the downside of app-only networks: no app, no charge.

    Check if a roaming app supports Badenova stations

    Some roaming platforms (like EnBW mobility+ or Maingau) may include Badenova stations. If you already have a roaming app installed, search for the station there. You can sometimes start a session through a roaming app when the native app is not cooperating.

Regional coverage limited to southwestern Germany

Badenova's network is concentrated in the Baden-Württemberg region, especially around Freiburg, the Upper Rhine area, and surrounding towns. Outside this region, you will not find Badenova chargers.

  • The Badenova app shows no stations outside the Freiburg/Baden region
  • You assumed Badenova coverage would extend along the Autobahn but it does not
  • The nearest Badenova station is 100 km or more from your destination
  • You are driving through Germany and planned stops based on Badenova but ran into coverage gaps

How to Fix It

    Check Badenova coverage before planning your route

    Open the Badenova app and look at the station map. You will see that coverage is regional, not national. If your trip extends beyond southwestern Germany, you need additional networks.

    Install apps for national German networks

    For travel across Germany, install EnBW mobility+ (large national network), Ionity (Autobahn-focused), or Fastned. These networks have stations along major highways throughout the country.

    EnBW mobility+ and Maingau EinfachStromLaden work as roaming apps that access chargers from dozens of operators. One app covers you across Germany instead of installing a separate app for each regional operator.

The Badenova app is designed for the German market and the interface is in German. If German is not your language, navigating the app takes extra effort.

    'Laden starten' means start charging. 'Laden beenden' means stop charging. 'Verfügbar' means available. 'Besetzt' means occupied. 'Außer Betrieb' means out of order. 'Bezahlung' means payment. These cover most of what you need.

    Create your Badenova account and add your payment method at home where you can take your time. Use Google Translate or a similar tool to translate the forms. You only need to do this once.

    On Android, the system can translate app interfaces into your language. On iOS, you can screenshot any page and use the built-in translation feature. This helps with settings you do not visit often.

Stations at company premises with limited access hours

Some Badenova chargers are installed at business locations or company parking areas that have restricted access during evenings, weekends, or holidays.

  • You arrived at a station and the parking area is gated or locked
  • The charger is accessible during business hours but not when you need it
  • The app shows the station as available but you physically cannot reach it
  • Weekend or holiday access is restricted

    Some Badenova stations list opening hours or access restrictions in the station details. Before driving there, look for notes about access times, especially if you plan to charge in the evening, early morning, or on weekends.

    Some company premises with public chargers provide a gate code or intercom button for EV drivers. Check the station listing in the app or look for instructions near the gate entrance.

    If the station is behind a locked gate, your only option is to find another charger. Check the Badenova app or a roaming app for the next nearest station that is on a public road or in a publicly accessible parking area.

Badenova is a smaller regional network. If the charger you planned to use is out of order, the next Badenova station may be far away. Larger networks offer more alternatives within a short drive.
