The Tesla Model S is compatible with Recharge chargers. Here is what you need to know about charging speed, connector fit, and how to handle common problems.

Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The Tesla Model S supports up to 250 kW DC charging. Recharge chargers deliver up to 300 kW. Your car's maximum intake is the limiting factor here, capping speed at 250 kW even on a faster charger.

  • Charging slows down above 80% state of charge on most EVs, including the Tesla Model S.
  • Cold weather reduces charging speed. The Tesla Model S supports battery preconditioning, which helps.
  • If multiple cars share the same Recharge station, power may be split between stalls.

Tesla Model S Charging Problems

Tesla Model S Charger Will Not Start a Session

You plugged in your Model S and nothing is happening. No green light on the charge port, no animation on the 17-inch touchscreen, just silence. Whether you are at a Supercharger, a third-party CCS2 station, or a home wallbox, there are a handful of common reasons the session will not begin.

  • Charge port LED stays white or flashes red after plugging in the connector
  • 17-inch touchscreen shows no charging animation or displays an error message
  • Supercharger stall makes a click but does not begin delivering power
  • CCS2 connector at a third-party station locks in but charging never starts
  • Tesla app shows 'Not Charging' even though the cable is connected

What to Do

    Check the charge port LED color

    Walk to the left rear of the car and look at the charge port light. White means ready but not connected. Blue means communicating. Green means charging. Red or amber means there is a fault. If it is white with the cable plugged in, remove and reseat the connector firmly.

    Unplug and replug the connector

    Remove the connector completely, wait five seconds, then reinsert it until you hear the latch click. On CCS2 connectors, make sure both the top (AC pins) and bottom (DC pins) sections are seated properly.

    Check for scheduled charging on the touchscreen

    On the 17-inch touchscreen, go to Controls, then Charging. If scheduled charging is active, you will see the planned start time. Tap to disable it or select 'Charge Now' to override the schedule.

    Authorize the session at non-Tesla chargers

    At third-party CCS2 stations, check whether the charger requires you to start the session through an app, RFID card, or contactless payment. Plug & Charge works at supported stations, but many still require manual authorization.

    Try a different stall or charger

    If you are at a Supercharger, move to a different stall. If you are at a third-party station, try the other connector. A faulted charger looks identical to a working one from the outside.

    Restart the touchscreen

    Hold both scroll wheels on the steering wheel for about 10 seconds until the 17-inch touchscreen goes black and reboots. This resets the charging controller and fixes some communication glitches. The car stays on during the reboot.

Tesla Model S Payment Failed at Charging Station

You are plugged in and the charger is waiting for payment, or the Supercharger session will not start because of a billing issue. Payment problems are one of the most common reasons drivers get stuck at chargers, and the Model S has multiple ways to pay depending on where you are charging.

  • Supercharger session will not start and the Tesla app shows a payment error
  • Third-party CCS2 charger displays 'Authorization failed' after tapping your card
  • RFID card is not recognized by the charger's reader
  • Plug & Charge does not activate at a supported station
  • Contactless bank card is rejected by the charger's payment terminal

What to Do

    Check your Tesla account payment method

    Open the Tesla app on your phone. Go to Account, then Payment. Verify your credit card is current and has not expired. If the card was replaced, update the details. Supercharger sessions will not start without a valid payment method on file.

    Try a different payment method at the charger

    If your RFID card failed, try contactless with your bank card or phone. If contactless failed, try the charger operator's app. Having at least two payment methods gives you a backup when one does not work.

    Scan the charger QR code for browser payment

    Most public chargers have a QR code on the unit. Scanning it with your phone opens the operator's payment page in your browser. You can usually pay with a credit card directly without downloading their app.

    Check your banking app for blocked transactions

    Open your banking app and look for flagged or declined transactions. Some banks require you to approve the charge manually. Approve it and retry the payment at the charger.

    Try Plug & Charge by replugging

    If the charger supports Plug & Charge, unplug the CCS2 connector from your Model S, wait a few seconds, and replug. Payment should authorize automatically through the cable. This only works if your Tesla account has Plug & Charge enabled and the charger supports ISO 15118.

    Move to a Supercharger or a different station

    If you cannot resolve the payment issue, find a Tesla Supercharger using the nav on the 17-inch touchscreen. Supercharger billing is handled entirely through your Tesla account, bypassing third-party payment systems.

Tesla Model S Charging Slower Than Expected at Charger

You pulled into a Supercharger expecting 250 kW and the 17-inch touchscreen shows 80 kW. Or your home wallbox is crawling at 3 kW instead of 11 kW. The Model S has one of the fastest charging curves on the road, but reaching peak speed depends on battery temperature, state of charge, and a few settings you can check in under a minute.

Symptoms

  • DC fast charging power well below 250 kW on the touchscreen despite a rated charger
  • AC home charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of the expected 11 kW on 3-phase
  • Charging speed drops sharply after 40-50% on the touchscreen during DC fast charging
  • Supercharger shows significantly lower kW than neighboring stalls
  • Non-Tesla CCS2 charger delivers far less power than its rated maximum

What to Do

  1. 1

    Check if the battery was preconditioned

    On the 17-inch touchscreen, tap the charging icon. If you see a snowflake icon or a message about conditioning, the battery was not warm enough when you arrived. Next time, navigate to the charger using Tesla nav at least 20-30 minutes before arrival so preconditioning kicks in automatically.

    Check your current state of charge

    If you are above 50%, the slower speed is expected on the 95 kWh NCA pack. Peak power happens roughly between 5-30%. For the fastest charging stops on a road trip, arrive between 10-20%.

    Move to an unpaired Supercharger stall

    Look at the stall numbers. If they are labeled in A/B pairs (3A/3B, 4A/4B), pick a stall where the paired stall is empty. At V3 or V4 Superchargers with the Magic Dock or the new V4 cable, this is not a concern.

    Check the AC charge current limit on the touchscreen

    Go to Controls, then Charging on the touchscreen. Look for the charge current setting. Make sure it is set to the maximum amperage. This only affects AC charging at home or destination chargers, not Supercharging.

    Try a different charger or stall

    If speeds remain low, the charger hardware may be degraded. Try another stall at the same location. On non-Tesla CCS2 stations, check the charger display for error codes or reduced power notices.

    Check for a Tesla software update

    Go to Controls, then Software on the touchscreen. If an update is pending, install it. Tesla has adjusted charging curves through over-the-air updates in the past, sometimes improving peak speeds.

Common Recharge Issues

Charger stuck in "preparing" state

You authenticated successfully, the charger says "preparing," but it never starts delivering power. This is one of the most reported issues on Recharge stations, especially at older units.

Symptoms

  • Charger screen shows "Preparing" or "Initializing" for more than two minutes
  • Your car's charging indicator does not activate
  • The Recharge app shows the session as active but 0 kW delivered
  • The charger fan spins up but no power flows

How to Fix It

    Wait up to three minutes

    Some Recharge units, particularly the 300kW stations, take longer to complete the power handshake with your car. Give it a full three minutes before taking action.

    Unplug and reconnect

    Remove the CCS2 connector, wait 15 seconds, then plug it back in firmly. This resets the communication between your car and the charger.

  3. 3

    Stop the session in the Recharge app and start a new one

    Open the Recharge app, tap Stop on the active session, wait for it to fully end, then start a new session on the same charger. This clears any stuck state on the backend.

    Try the other connector on the same unit

    Many Recharge stations have two CCS2 connectors. If one is stuck, the other connector on the same unit often works fine.

    Use a different authentication method

    If you started with the app, try your RFID card instead, or vice versa. Sometimes the issue is with the authentication path, not the charger hardware.

Old Fortum branding causes app scan failure

Recharge was originally part of Fortum's charging operations before being spun off as a separate company. Some older stations still display Fortum logos and QR codes. Scanning an old Fortum QR code with the Recharge app may not work, or it may redirect to a dead Fortum page.

  • QR code on the charger opens a Fortum website or shows an error
  • Recharge app says "Charger not found" after scanning
  • Station ID on the physical unit does not match what the Recharge app expects
  • The charger has Fortum branding but is listed as Recharge in third-party apps

How to Fix It

    Ignore the QR code and search by station name in the Recharge app

    Open the Recharge app, use the map or search to find the station by location. The charger will appear under its Recharge name even if the physical unit still says Fortum.

    Enter the charger ID manually

    Look for a numeric ID on the charger, often printed on a sticker near the connector. In the Recharge app, tap "Enter ID" and type it in directly.

    Use RFID or contactless payment instead of the app

    Tap your Recharge RFID card or a contactless bank card on the reader. This bypasses the app entirely and works regardless of the branding on the charger.

    Check if contactless is available on this unit

    Not all Recharge stations support contactless bank card payment. Look for a card reader terminal on the charger. If there is no terminal, you will need the app or an RFID card.

RFID card from old Fortum account not recognized

If you had a Fortum Charge & Drive account and RFID card, it may not work automatically on the Recharge network. Some cards were migrated, others were not.

Symptoms

  • Tapping your old Fortum RFID card shows "Card not recognized" on the charger
  • The charger beeps but does not start a session
  • Your Fortum card works on some stations but not others

How to Fix It

    Log in to the Recharge app and check your RFID cards

    Open the Recharge app, go to your account settings, and look under RFID cards. If your old Fortum card is not listed, it was not migrated automatically.

    Re-register your RFID card

    In the Recharge app, tap "Add RFID card" and follow the steps. You will need the card number printed on the back of your RFID card.

    Use the app to start the session while you wait for RFID activation

    RFID card registration can take up to 24 hours to propagate across all stations. Use the app to authenticate in the meantime.

    Order a new Recharge RFID card if re-registration fails

    Some older Fortum cards use a chip format that is not compatible. You can order a new Recharge RFID card through the app or website.

Contactless payment not accepted

You are trying to tap your bank card or phone to pay, but the charger does not respond or shows an error. Contactless payment availability varies across Recharge stations.

Symptoms

  • No card reader terminal visible on the charger
  • Card reader shows "Payment failed" or does not respond to taps
  • Apple Pay or Google Pay not recognized
  • The charger prompts for an RFID card but you only have a bank card

How to Fix It

    Check if this station supports contactless payment

    Look for a separate payment terminal with a contactless symbol. Not all Recharge stations have been upgraded. The Recharge app shows payment options for each station on the station detail page.

    Try removing and re-holding your card

    Hold your card flat against the reader for at least three seconds. Some terminals need a longer hold than you might expect. Remove the card fully, then try again.

    Fall back to the Recharge app

    If contactless is not working, open the Recharge app and start the session from there. You need a payment method saved in the app.

    Try a different card

    Some Visa Electron and certain prepaid cards are not accepted by the payment terminals. A standard Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card usually works.

Charging speed much lower than expected

The station is rated for 300kW, but your car is only pulling 50kW or less. While your car's battery management limits the maximum speed, Recharge stations can also throttle power.

Symptoms

  • Charger display shows far less power than the station's rated capacity
  • Charging speed drops suddenly mid-session
  • Other cars at the same station are also charging slowly
  • The Recharge app shows the session but at low power

How to Fix It

    Check how many other cars are charging at the same station

    Recharge stations with multiple connectors often share a power cabinet. If two or three cars are charging simultaneously, the available power per car drops. This is normal and not a fault.

    Check your battery level

    DC fast charging slows significantly above 80% on most EVs. If your battery is above 70-80%, the slower speed is your car protecting the battery, not a problem with the Recharge station.

    Check the temperature

    In cold weather, your car may limit charging speed until the battery warms up. This can take 10-15 minutes of charging before speeds increase. Some cars precondition the battery if you set the charger as a destination in navigation.

    Try a different connector at the station

    Individual connectors can have faults that limit power output. If another connector is free, unplug and try it.

    Report the issue in the Recharge app

    If the speed is unusually low and none of the above apply, report it through the Recharge app. Tap the active session and look for a "Report issue" option. This helps Recharge identify hardware problems.

Recharge App Tips

  • Save a payment method in the Recharge app before you arrive at the station. Adding a card while standing at a charger in the rain is not fun.
  • Use the Recharge app map to check station availability before driving there. The real-time status is generally reliable for showing which connectors are free.
  • Enable push notifications in the Recharge app. You will get an alert when your session ends, which is useful if you are in a shop or restaurant nearby.
  • If the app is slow to load or crashes, force-close it and reopen. The Recharge app occasionally hangs after a system update on your phone.
  • Check the station detail page in the app for the exact connector types and maximum power. Some Recharge stations have both 50kW and 300kW connectors at the same location.

Payment Tips

  • Contactless bank card payment is being rolled out but is not available at every Recharge station yet. Always have the app or an RFID card as a backup.
  • The Recharge app supports multiple saved payment cards. If one fails, switch to another card in the app settings before trying again.
  • RFID cards from roaming providers like Plugsurfing or NewMotion work at most Recharge stations, but not all. Check your roaming provider's coverage map.
  • If you are charged for a session that did not deliver power, you can dispute it through the Recharge app under your charging history. Select the session and tap "Report a problem."
