The Tesla Model S is compatible with Helen chargers. Here is what you need to know about charging speed, connector fit, and how to handle common problems.

Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The Tesla Model S supports up to 250 kW DC charging. Helen chargers deliver up to 200 kW. The network's maximum power is lower than what the car can accept, so your effective speed tops out at 200 kW.

  • Charging slows down above 80% state of charge on most EVs, including the Tesla Model S.
  • Cold weather reduces charging speed. The Tesla Model S supports battery preconditioning, which helps.
  • If multiple cars share the same Helen station, power may be split between stalls.

Tesla Model S Charging Problems

Tesla Model S Charger Will Not Start a Session

You plugged in your Model S and nothing is happening. No green light on the charge port, no animation on the 17-inch touchscreen, just silence. Whether you are at a Supercharger, a third-party CCS2 station, or a home wallbox, there are a handful of common reasons the session will not begin.

  • Charge port LED stays white or flashes red after plugging in the connector
  • 17-inch touchscreen shows no charging animation or displays an error message
  • Supercharger stall makes a click but does not begin delivering power
  • CCS2 connector at a third-party station locks in but charging never starts
  • Tesla app shows 'Not Charging' even though the cable is connected

What to Do

    Check the charge port LED color

    Walk to the left rear of the car and look at the charge port light. White means ready but not connected. Blue means communicating. Green means charging. Red or amber means there is a fault. If it is white with the cable plugged in, remove and reseat the connector firmly.

    Unplug and replug the connector

    Remove the connector completely, wait five seconds, then reinsert it until you hear the latch click. On CCS2 connectors, make sure both the top (AC pins) and bottom (DC pins) sections are seated properly.

    Check for scheduled charging on the touchscreen

    On the 17-inch touchscreen, go to Controls, then Charging. If scheduled charging is active, you will see the planned start time. Tap to disable it or select 'Charge Now' to override the schedule.

    Authorize the session at non-Tesla chargers

    At third-party CCS2 stations, check whether the charger requires you to start the session through an app, RFID card, or contactless payment. Plug & Charge works at supported stations, but many still require manual authorization.

    Try a different stall or charger

    If you are at a Supercharger, move to a different stall. If you are at a third-party station, try the other connector. A faulted charger looks identical to a working one from the outside.

    Restart the touchscreen

    Hold both scroll wheels on the steering wheel for about 10 seconds until the 17-inch touchscreen goes black and reboots. This resets the charging controller and fixes some communication glitches. The car stays on during the reboot.

Tesla Model S Payment Failed at Charging Station

You are plugged in and the charger is waiting for payment, or the Supercharger session will not start because of a billing issue. Payment problems are one of the most common reasons drivers get stuck at chargers, and the Model S has multiple ways to pay depending on where you are charging.

  • Supercharger session will not start and the Tesla app shows a payment error
  • Third-party CCS2 charger displays 'Authorization failed' after tapping your card
  • RFID card is not recognized by the charger's reader
  • Plug & Charge does not activate at a supported station
  • Contactless bank card is rejected by the charger's payment terminal

What to Do

    Check your Tesla account payment method

    Open the Tesla app on your phone. Go to Account, then Payment. Verify your credit card is current and has not expired. If the card was replaced, update the details. Supercharger sessions will not start without a valid payment method on file.

    Try a different payment method at the charger

    If your RFID card failed, try contactless with your bank card or phone. If contactless failed, try the charger operator's app. Having at least two payment methods gives you a backup when one does not work.

    Scan the charger QR code for browser payment

    Most public chargers have a QR code on the unit. Scanning it with your phone opens the operator's payment page in your browser. You can usually pay with a credit card directly without downloading their app.

    Check your banking app for blocked transactions

    Open your banking app and look for flagged or declined transactions. Some banks require you to approve the charge manually. Approve it and retry the payment at the charger.

    Try Plug & Charge by replugging

    If the charger supports Plug & Charge, unplug the CCS2 connector from your Model S, wait a few seconds, and replug. Payment should authorize automatically through the cable. This only works if your Tesla account has Plug & Charge enabled and the charger supports ISO 15118.

    Move to a Supercharger or a different station

    If you cannot resolve the payment issue, find a Tesla Supercharger using the nav on the 17-inch touchscreen. Supercharger billing is handled entirely through your Tesla account, bypassing third-party payment systems.

Tesla Model S Charging Slower Than Expected at Charger

You pulled into a Supercharger expecting 250 kW and the 17-inch touchscreen shows 80 kW. Or your home wallbox is crawling at 3 kW instead of 11 kW. The Model S has one of the fastest charging curves on the road, but reaching peak speed depends on battery temperature, state of charge, and a few settings you can check in under a minute.

Symptoms

  • DC fast charging power well below 250 kW on the touchscreen despite a rated charger
  • AC home charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of the expected 11 kW on 3-phase
  • Charging speed drops sharply after 40-50% on the touchscreen during DC fast charging
  • Supercharger shows significantly lower kW than neighboring stalls
  • Non-Tesla CCS2 charger delivers far less power than its rated maximum

What to Do

    Check if the battery was preconditioned

    On the 17-inch touchscreen, tap the charging icon. If you see a snowflake icon or a message about conditioning, the battery was not warm enough when you arrived. Next time, navigate to the charger using Tesla nav at least 20-30 minutes before arrival so preconditioning kicks in automatically.

    Check your current state of charge

    If you are above 50%, the slower speed is expected on the 95 kWh NCA pack. Peak power happens roughly between 5-30%. For the fastest charging stops on a road trip, arrive between 10-20%.

    Move to an unpaired Supercharger stall

    Look at the stall numbers. If they are labeled in A/B pairs (3A/3B, 4A/4B), pick a stall where the paired stall is empty. At V3 or V4 Superchargers with the Magic Dock or the new V4 cable, this is not a concern.

    Check the AC charge current limit on the touchscreen

    Go to Controls, then Charging on the touchscreen. Look for the charge current setting. Make sure it is set to the maximum amperage. This only affects AC charging at home or destination chargers, not Supercharging.

    Try a different charger or stall

    If speeds remain low, the charger hardware may be degraded. Try another stall at the same location. On non-Tesla CCS2 stations, check the charger display for error codes or reduced power notices.

    Check for a Tesla software update

    Go to Controls, then Software on the touchscreen. If an update is pending, install it. Tesla has adjusted charging curves through over-the-air updates in the past, sometimes improving peak speeds.

Common Helen Issues

Charging section buried in the Helen app

The Helen app handles electricity contracts, energy consumption, and EV charging in one place. Finding the charging features can take a few taps if you are used to dedicated charging apps.

  • You opened the Helen app but cannot find how to start a charging session
  • The app shows your electricity bill but no charging options
  • You found a station list but cannot figure out how to initiate charging
  • The charging feature seems to disappear after app updates

How to Fix It

    Look for the EV charging or e-mobility section

    In the Helen app, EV charging is usually under a dedicated menu item like 'Charging' or 'E-mobility.' It is not on the main dashboard with your electricity contract. Tap the menu icon and scroll through the options.

    Make sure EV charging is activated on your Helen account

    If you are a Helen electricity customer, EV charging may need to be activated separately. Check your account settings or the Helen website. You may need to accept additional terms for the charging service.

    Update the app to the latest version

    Helen occasionally reorganizes the app layout. If the charging section has moved after an update, check the main menu, bottom navigation, or any new tabs that appeared. The latest version will have the current layout.

    Try the Helen Charging web portal as a backup

    If the app is giving you trouble, Helen also offers a web-based portal for starting sessions and viewing history. Search for 'Helen lataus' in your browser.

RFID card registration through your Helen energy account

To use an RFID card at Helen chargers, you need to register it through your Helen energy account. This is different from networks where you simply order a card and it works.

  • You received a Helen RFID card but it does not start the charger
  • Your third-party RFID card is not accepted at Helen stations
  • The charger shows 'Card not recognized' when you tap
  • You are not sure how to link your RFID card to your Helen account

How to Fix It

    Register your RFID card in the Helen app or on helen.fi

    Log in to your Helen account (app or website) and navigate to the charging or RFID section. Enter the card number printed on your RFID card. The registration may take a few minutes to activate.

    Wait 10 to 15 minutes after registration

    The card activation is not always instant. After registering, wait at least 10 minutes before trying the card at a charger. If it still does not work after 30 minutes, contact Helen support.

    Check if your RFID card is from a compatible roaming network

    Helen accepts some third-party RFID cards through roaming agreements, but not all. Cards from Virta-connected networks are more likely to work. If your card is from a network without a roaming agreement with Helen, it will be rejected.

    While you sort out the RFID issue, the Helen app can start a session directly. Select the charger on the map, tap start, and the session begins without needing a physical card.

Plugging into an AC charger when you expected DC fast charging

Helen operates both AC chargers (11 to 22 kW) and DC fast chargers (up to 200 kW) in the Helsinki area. Some locations have both types side by side, and it is easy to plug into the wrong one.

  • Charging speed is only 11 kW or 22 kW at a station you expected to be fast
  • The connector is Type 2 instead of CCS2
  • Your vehicle's dashboard shows AC charging, not DC
  • The charger unit looks smaller and simpler than a typical fast charger

How to Fix It

    Check the charger type before plugging in

    DC fast chargers are larger units with thick CCS2 cables. AC chargers are smaller, often wall-mounted or on a slim post, with a Type 2 connector. If the connector is Type 2 only, it is an AC charger.

    Use the Helen app to identify charger types at each location

    The app shows whether a station offers AC, DC, or both. Filter for DC fast chargers if you need a quick charge. Station listings should indicate the maximum power output.

    If you need speed, unplug and move to the DC unit

    If you accidentally plugged into an AC charger and need faster charging, stop the session, unplug, and move your vehicle to the DC fast charger at the same location (if available).

    AC charging is fine if you have time

    If you are parked for several hours (shopping, at work, overnight), an AC charger at 11 to 22 kW will add meaningful range. AC charging is also gentler on your battery than frequent DC fast charging.

Parking time limits at urban charging locations

Some Helen chargers in Helsinki are installed in areas with parking time restrictions. You may get a parking fine if you exceed the posted limit, even while charging.

  • You see a parking time limit sign near the charger (e.g. 2 or 4 hours)
  • You received a parking fine despite being plugged in and charging
  • Your charging session takes longer than the posted parking limit
  • You are not sure if the parking limit applies while charging

How to Fix It

    Read the parking signs before plugging in

    Check the parking signs near the charging spot. In Helsinki, many on-street and parking garage spots have time limits (often 2 or 4 hours). These limits typically apply regardless of whether you are charging.

    Set a timer on your phone

    If there is a time limit, set a phone alarm so you can move your vehicle before the limit expires. Even if charging is not complete, a parking fine is not worth the extra kWh.

    Use a parking disc if required

    In Finland, many time-limited parking areas require a parking disc (pysäköintikiekko) displayed on your dashboard. Set the arrival time and place it visibly.

    Choose locations without time restrictions for longer sessions

    If your vehicle charges slowly on AC and you need several hours, use the Helen app to find chargers in locations without strict parking time limits, such as certain parking garages or less restricted areas.

Limited coverage outside Helsinki metropolitan area

Helen's charging network is concentrated in Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa. If you are traveling outside the capital region, Helen chargers become scarce or unavailable.

  • The Helen app shows no stations along your route outside Helsinki
  • You assumed Helen would have chargers at your destination but there are none
  • The nearest Helen charger is 50 km or more away
  • You planned a road trip relying on Helen and now need alternatives

How to Fix It

    Check coverage before you travel

    Open the Helen app or website and zoom out on the map. Helen's stations are clustered in the Helsinki metropolitan area. If your destination is outside this zone, you will need another network.

    Install backup charging apps for other networks

    For travel outside Helsinki, install apps for networks with broader Finnish coverage like K-Lataus, ABC-lataus, Virta, or Recharge. Having multiple apps ready means you always have options.

    Use a roaming RFID card for multi-network access

    A roaming RFID card from Virta or PlugSurfing lets you access chargers from multiple networks without installing each network's app. Roaming rates may be slightly higher, but the convenience is worth it for occasional use.

    Apps like A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) show chargers from all networks. Enter your vehicle model and destination, and the app will suggest optimal charging stops regardless of which network operates them.

  • The Helen app combines energy services and EV charging in one place. Look for the dedicated charging or e-mobility section, not the electricity dashboard.
  • Use the app map to check whether a station is AC or DC before driving there. AC and DC chargers look different on the map listing, with power output shown for each.
  • The app shows real-time availability for most Helen chargers. A quick check before you leave saves a wasted trip to a fully occupied station.
  • If you are a Helen electricity customer, your charging costs may appear on the same invoice as your home electricity. Check your billing settings in the app.

Payment Tips

  • Register your RFID card through your Helen account before visiting a station. Unregistered cards will not be recognized by the charger.
  • The Helen app is the most reliable payment method at Helen stations. If your RFID card is not working, the app can start a session directly.
  • Third-party RFID cards work at some Helen stations through roaming agreements, but coverage is not guaranteed. Check with your card provider for Helen compatibility.
  • Helen's pricing is per kWh. The app shows the current rate before you start a session. AC and DC charging may have different per-kWh prices.
