Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The BMW iX1 supports up to 128 kW DC charging. Atlante chargers deliver up to 300 kW. Your car's maximum intake is the limiting factor here, capping speed at 128 kW even on a faster charger.

  • Charging slows down above 80% state of charge on most EVs, including the BMW iX1.
  • Cold weather reduces charging speed. The BMW iX1 supports battery preconditioning, which helps.
  • If multiple cars share the same Atlante station, power may be split between stalls.

BMW iX1 Charging Problems

BMW iX1 Charger Won't Start: Step-by-Step Solutions

You have plugged the CCS2 or Type 2 cable into your BMW iX1, but nothing happens. No charging indicator, no power flowing, just silence. This is one of the most common frustrations at public chargers, and it usually has a straightforward fix.

Symptoms

  • Charger display shows 'waiting' or 'connect vehicle' even though the cable is plugged in
  • iDrive does not show any charging activity or progress
  • The charging port LED on the iX1 does not turn blue or green
  • The charger returns an error code after attempting to start
  • The CCS2 plug feels loose or does not click into place

What to Do

  1. 1

Unlock the car and open the charge port

Make sure the iX1 is unlocked. The charge port must be open and ready to accept the connector. Press the charge port flap if it does not open automatically.

  2. 2

    Insert the connector firmly

Push the CCS2 or Type 2 connector straight into the port until it clicks. Do not angle it. A solid connection is required for the handshake between your iX1 and the charger.

  3. 3

    Authenticate at the charger

Tap your RFID card, open the charging network app, or use contactless payment at the charger terminal. Wait for the charger screen to confirm authentication before expecting charging to begin.

  4. 4

Check iDrive for charging status or errors

Look at the iDrive screen for any messages about charging. If it mentions a schedule, go to Charging Settings and switch to 'Charge Immediately.' If it shows an error, note the message.

  5. 5

    Try unplugging and reconnecting

Disconnect the cable, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. This resets the communication between the charger and your iX1. Sometimes the initial handshake simply fails.

  6. 6

Try a different charger or stall

If the charger still will not start, move to another stall or station. A faulty charger is surprisingly common. Report the broken unit through the network's app.

BMW iX1 Charging Payment Rejected: How to Fix Fast

You are at the charger, your BMW iX1 is ready, but the payment will not go through. The RFID card is not recognized, the app throws an error, or contactless payment is declined. This is not a car problem, but it still stops you from charging. Here is how to get past it.

Symptoms

  • The charger displays 'authentication failed' or 'payment declined'
  • Your RFID card does not trigger any response from the charger
  • The charging app shows an error when trying to start a session
  • Contactless card payment is declined at the charger terminal
  • The charger asks for payment but you cannot find a compatible method

What to Do

  1. 1

    Try a different payment method

If your RFID card fails, try the charging network's app. If the app fails, try contactless payment with a bank card. Most chargers accept at least two methods.

  2. 2

Check your account and payment details

Open the charging app on your phone and verify that your payment method is current. For prepaid accounts, check your balance. For subscription accounts, make sure your plan is active.

  3. 3

    Verify the charger's supported networks

Look at the charger for logos of accepted networks (Ionity, Shell Recharge, Allego, etc.). If your provider is not listed, you may need ad-hoc payment via the charger's QR code or contactless terminal.

  4. 4

Use the QR code on the charger

Many European chargers now have a QR code for ad-hoc payments. Scan it with your phone camera to open a browser-based payment page. You can pay with a credit or debit card without any app.

  5. 5

    Restart the charger session

If payment seemed to go through but charging did not start, cancel the session in the app and start a new one. Sometimes the authorization succeeds but the charger needs a fresh command.

  6. 6

    Contact the network's support

Most chargers display a support phone number. If you cannot resolve the payment issue, call the number. They can sometimes authorize a session remotely.

BMW iX1 Charging Too Slow? Causes and Step-by-Step

You plugged in your BMW iX1 expecting fast charging, but the power is nowhere near the 128kW your car supports. This is frustrating, especially on a longer trip. Several factors can throttle your iX1's charging speed, and most of them are fixable.

Symptoms

  • Charging power shown in iDrive is well below 128kW on a DC fast charger
  • Estimated charging time is significantly longer than the typical 33 minutes for 10-80%
  • Charging speed drops sharply before reaching 80% state of charge
  • AC charging at home or destination is stuck below 11kW
  • Battery temperature warning or snowflake icon appears in iDrive

What to Do

  1. 1

    Check charging power in iDrive

Open the charging status screen on iDrive. It shows current kW, estimated time remaining, and battery temperature. This tells you whether the car or the charger is the bottleneck.

  2. 2

Activate preconditioning via the BMW app

In the My BMW app, set your next charging stop as a destination. The iX1 will precondition the battery to optimal temperature while driving. This makes the biggest difference in cold weather.

  3. 3

    Verify the charger's rated power

Look at the charger unit or check the charging network's app for the station's maximum output. If it is a 50kW unit, your iX1 cannot charge faster than 50kW there.

  4. 4

Move to a non-shared stall if possible

If the charger has two CCS2 cables and someone is using the other one, power may be split. Try a charger with no one on the adjacent stall.

  5. 5

Keep charging between 10% and 80%

The iX1 charges fastest in this range. If you only need enough range to reach your destination, unplug at 80% and save time.

  6. 6

    Check for software updates

BMW occasionally releases over-the-air updates that improve charging performance. In iDrive, go to Settings, then Software Update to check for available updates.

Common Atlante Issues

New station with teething problems

Atlante is expanding rapidly, and many stations are brand new. Newly installed chargers sometimes have firmware bugs, incomplete network configuration, or hardware that has not been fully tested under real-world conditions.

Symptoms

  • Charger turns on but fails to communicate with your vehicle
  • Session starts but drops after a few seconds
  • Charger screen shows an error code you have never seen before
  • Station appears on the map but the chargers are not yet operational

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Try a different charger at the same station

New stations often have multiple units and the issue may be limited to one charger. Try another unit before giving up on the location.

  2. 2

Unplug, wait 30 seconds, and retry

New charger firmware sometimes fails on the first handshake but succeeds on the second attempt. A short wait lets the charger reset its session state.

  3. 3

Start the session through the Atlante app

If the charger's screen or contactless reader is not working properly, the app provides a separate communication path to the charger's backend. This can bypass local hardware issues.

  4. 4

Check the Atlante app for station status notes

Atlante sometimes posts notices about newly activated stations that are still in testing. The station detail page in the app may show a note about limited functionality.

  5. 5

Report the issue and move to the next station

Use the Atlante app to report the problem. New station issues are usually fixed quickly once reported. Check the app for the nearest alternative Atlante or competitor station.

App crashes on older phones

The Atlante app can be unstable on older phones or phones running outdated operating systems. The app may crash during login, while loading the map, or in the middle of starting a session.

Symptoms

  • App closes unexpectedly when you open the station map
  • App freezes during the payment screen
  • Login screen loads but the app crashes after entering credentials
  • App works briefly but crashes when you try to start a session

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Update the Atlante app to the latest version

Atlante pushes frequent updates that fix stability issues. Open the App Store or Google Play and check for updates before your trip.

  2. 2

    Clear the app cache

On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Atlante, and clear the cache. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app. Corrupted cache data is a common cause of crashes.

  3. 3

Check your phone's operating system version

The Atlante app may require iOS 15+ or Android 10+. If your phone is on an older version, update if possible. If your phone cannot update, you may need a roaming app as a backup.

  4. 4

Use contactless payment as a fallback

If the app keeps crashing and the station supports contactless, tap your credit or debit card on the charger's payment terminal. Not all Atlante stations have this yet, but it completely bypasses the app.

  5. 5

    Try a roaming app

Apps like Chargemap, Shell Recharge, or Electropass can start sessions at Atlante stations without using the Atlante app. Check roaming coverage before relying on this.

Contactless payment terminal not activated

Atlante is rolling out contactless card payment across its network, but not every charger has an active terminal yet. Some units have the hardware installed but the payment function is not turned on.

Symptoms

  • Card reader is visible on the charger but does not respond to a tap
  • Screen says 'Use app to start' with no contactless option shown
  • Contactless symbol is printed on the charger but the reader light is off
  • You see a payment terminal but tapping produces no response

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Download and use the Atlante app

At stations where contactless is not yet active, the Atlante app is the primary payment method. Download it before your trip and add a payment card in advance.

  2. 2

Check the charger screen for payment instructions

Some Atlante chargers display which payment methods are currently available. If contactless is not listed, the terminal is not active at that unit.

  3. 3

Try a different charger at the same station

Contactless activation sometimes rolls out unit by unit. Another charger at the same station may have an active terminal.

  4. 4

Use a roaming RFID card or app

If you have an RFID card from a roaming provider, try tapping it. Some Atlante stations accept roaming RFID even when the contactless card terminal is not active.

Charger screen hard to read in direct sunlight

Some Atlante charger screens have low brightness levels that make them nearly impossible to read in bright sunlight. This is especially common at stations in Southern Europe during summer.

Symptoms

  • Screen content is barely visible outdoors during the day
  • You cannot read the price, status, or error messages on the screen
  • Screen appears to be off but the charger is actually on
  • You have to cup your hands around the screen to read it

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Use your body or hand to shade the screen

Stand to block direct sunlight from hitting the screen. Even partial shade can make the display readable.

  2. 2

Take a photo of the screen with your phone

Your phone camera can sometimes capture what your eyes cannot. Take a photo and zoom in to read the text.

  3. 3

Use the Atlante app to monitor your session

All session information (charging speed, energy delivered, cost, estimated time) is available in the app. You do not need the charger screen to track your session.

  4. 4

Start the session entirely through the app

If you cannot read the screen at all, use the Atlante app to select the charger, start the session, and stop it when done. This avoids needing to interact with the screen.

Cable connector requires specific angle to lock

Some Atlante charger cables need to be inserted at a particular angle or with extra force for the CCS2 connector to seat properly. If it is not fully locked, the session will not start.

Symptoms

  • Connector feels like it is in but the charger does not recognize it
  • Charger screen says 'Connect cable' even though the cable is plugged in
  • You hear a partial click but the connector is not locked
  • Connector slides back out after you let go

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Push the connector straight in, then slightly upward

Some Atlante CCS2 connectors need a slight upward tilt after the initial push to engage the locking mechanism. You should feel and hear a solid click.

  2. 2

Check for debris in the vehicle's charging port

Dust, ice, or a small pebble in the port can prevent the connector from seating fully. Inspect the port and brush out anything you find.

  3. 3

Make sure the vehicle is unlocked and ready to charge

Some vehicles lock the charging port flap or disable the inlet when the car is locked or in drive mode. Ensure the car is in park and unlocked.

  4. 4

Try a different cable if the charger has two

If the charger has two CCS2 cables, try the other one. One cable may have a slightly worn connector that does not seat as easily.

Atlante App Tips

  • Download the Atlante app and create an account before traveling to Southern Europe. Relying on contactless payment is risky since not all terminals are active yet.
  • Check station comments and ratings in the Atlante app. Because the network is new, other drivers often share useful notes about access, parking, or charger quirks.
  • Keep the Atlante app updated. As a new network, they release frequent fixes for stability and feature issues.
  • If the Atlante app crashes on your phone, have a backup roaming app (Chargemap or Shell Recharge) installed and ready to go.

Payment Tips

  • The Atlante app is currently the most reliable payment method across the network. Contactless card payment is expanding but not guaranteed at every station.
  • Add your payment card to the Atlante app before your trip. Setting up payment at the charger on a weak mobile connection is unreliable.
  • Atlante pricing is shown per kWh in the app before you start a session. Check the rate before plugging in, as prices can vary between locations.
  • If contactless payment fails, the Atlante app is your fallback. If the app also fails, try a roaming provider like Chargemap or Shell Recharge.
