How to Pay for Ionity Electric Car Charging Without an App
Updated April 2026
You are at an Ionity electric car charging station and you do not have the Ionity app. You can still charge. Ionity offers multiple payment methods at the charger, including contactless card, QR code, and third-party roaming cards. Here is exactly how each method works, what it costs, and when it makes sense to get the app instead.
Pricing information is approximate and based on publicly available data as of early 2026. Actual prices vary by country, station, and whether the charger has been updated. Always check the charger screen or app for current rates before starting a session. EVcourse is not affiliated with Ionity or any charging network.
Quick Fix
- Newer charger with a card terminal? Just tap your credit or debit card. The session starts automatically.
- No card terminal? Scan the QR code on the charger sticker. It opens a browser page where you enter card details.
- Have a Shell Recharge or EnBW card? Tap it on the RFID reader. Most roaming cards work at Ionity.
Three Ways to Pay at Ionity Without the App
1. Contactless card (newer "Halo" chargers)
Tap your credit card, debit card, or phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay) on the terminal. Wait for authorization, then plug in. This is the fastest method and available on all newer Ionity installations.
2. QR code (older chargers)
Scan the QR code sticker on the charger with your phone. A browser page opens where you enter your card details. Confirm payment, then plug in. Requires mobile data. QR code stickers can sometimes be faded by sun and weather, making them hard to scan.
3. Roaming RFID card
If you have a Shell Recharge, EnBW mobility+, Plugsurfing, or Octopus Electroverse card, tap it on the RFID reader. The session starts after authorization. Roaming prices are typically €0.05 to 0.15/kWh above Ionity's direct rate.
How Much Does Ionity Cost Without a Membership?
Ionity ad-hoc pricing is among the highest in Europe, but you can charge now and decide about a subscription later.
- → Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain: Approximately €0.69 to 0.79 per kWh
- → United Kingdom: Approximately £0.74 to £0.80 per kWh
All prices are approximate and vary by location. Check the charger screen or the Ionity app for the current rate at a specific station.
Is the Ionity Passport Worth It?
Passport Motion
Approximately €5.99 per month. Reduces the per-kWh price by approximately €0.20. Best if you charge at Ionity occasionally.
Passport Power
Approximately €11.99 per month. Drops the price to approximately €0.45 to 0.55 per kWh. Best if you charge at Ionity regularly (twice a month or more).
Both subscriptions have a one-month minimum commitment and can be cancelled anytime. If you charge at Ionity more than twice a month, Passport Power likely saves money compared to ad-hoc. For a single charge on a road trip, ad-hoc or a roaming card is simpler.
Which Roaming Cards Work at Ionity?
- → Shell Recharge: Works at Ionity. Typically adds €0.05 to 0.15/kWh markup.
- → EnBW mobility+: Works at Ionity. Pricing depends on your EnBW tier.
- → Plugsurfing: Works at Ionity. Check the app for current pricing at this station.
- → Octopus Electroverse: Works at Ionity. Often competitive pricing with potential discounts.
- → Manufacturer cards: BMW Charging, VW We Charge, and similar cards from your car manufacturer sometimes offer lower rates at Ionity than ad-hoc or third-party roaming.
What the Ionity Payment Screen Looks Like
The screen walks you through the process step by step.
- 1. "Please Select Connector" Pick the CCS connector on the side closest to your car.
- 2. "Select Payment Method" Choose between card, QR, or RFID.
- 3. "Tap Card or Scan QR" Follow the prompt for your chosen method.
- 4. "Checking Authorization" (with loading circle) The charger is verifying payment. Wait a few seconds.
If the screen shows something you do not recognize or is in a language you do not speak, scan it with the EVcourse app for an instant translation and explanation.
Common Payment Problems at Ionity
- → Card declined: Often caused by 3D Secure or Strong Customer Authentication checks failing on the unattended terminal. Try a different card.
- → QR code will not scan: The sticker may be faded by sun or weather. Try typing the URL printed below the QR code into your browser manually, or use a different payment method.
- → Roaming card not recognized: Not all roaming agreements are active at every station. Try a different card or switch to card/QR payment.
From Finn, engineer: Ionity's ad-hoc pricing is among the highest in Europe, but if you are at the charger and need power now, it is still cheaper than running out of charge. If you charge at Ionity regularly, the Passport subscription pays for itself quickly. If you are just visiting and need one charge, ad-hoc or a roaming card is the simplest option.
