EV Charging in Denmark

Updated March 2026

Denmark has high EV adoption driven by favorable tax incentives, and the charging network reflects this maturity. Clever is the dominant domestic operator, with stations across the country. The compact geography means most destinations are reachable with a single charge in a modern EV. Highway chargers along the E20, E45, and other major routes provide reliable fast charging.

EV charging infrastructure changes quickly. Networks expand, pricing updates, apps change, and new chargers appear regularly. The information on this page reflects general conditions as of early 2026, but always verify details with the charging network before you travel.

Practical Tips

  • Download the Clever app. It is the most important domestic charging network in Denmark with extensive coverage.
  • Denmark is compact. Most trips within the country are under 300 km, meaning many modern EVs can make them on a single charge.
  • The Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen) connects Zealand and Funen. There are chargers on both sides, so you can charge before or after the crossing.
  • Ionity and Shell Recharge stations are available along major highways for high-power fast charging.
  • Copenhagen has good public AC charging, but parking fees apply at most locations.
  • If driving to Sweden via the Oresund Bridge, charge on the Danish side or plan for a stop soon after arriving in Malmö.

How to Pay

Clever is the most widely accepted payment method in Denmark. Their app and RFID card cover the majority of public chargers. Shell Recharge and Plugsurfing provide roaming access to additional networks. Contactless bank card payment is available at Ionity and some newer stations. Prices are shown in DKK (approximately 3.5 to 4.5 DKK per kWh for DC fast charging).

Recommended roaming cards

A roaming card lets you charge across multiple networks with one account. In Denmark, the most useful are:

  • Shell Recharge
  • Plugsurfing

Charging Costs

Average home electricity

Prices are approximate averages including 25% VAT. Actual costs vary by network, time of day, and subscription plans.

Home charging is significantly cheaper than public DC fast charging in Denmark. If you have access to a home charger or workplace charging, use it for daily needs and save DC fast charging for road trips.

EV Incentives for Businesses

Reduced registration tax for EVs. Company EVs benefit from lower taxable value calculation.

Tax incentives change frequently. Verify current rates with your local tax authority.

Road Trips

Denmark's highway network is well covered with fast chargers. The E45 from the German border to Aalborg and the E20 from Copenhagen westward have reliable charging options. Driving to Norway via ferry is common, and ferry terminals sometimes have chargers. For trips to Sweden, the Oresund Bridge puts you in Malmö in 30 minutes with good charging on both sides.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not assume Clever chargers accept all roaming cards. While coverage is improving, some Clever stations still work best with the Clever app.
  • Do not forget the bridge tolls when budgeting your trip. The Great Belt and Oresund bridges have significant crossing fees.
  • Do not ignore the wind. Denmark is flat and can be very windy, which increases energy consumption, especially on highways.
  • Do not skip the Clever app if you plan to charge regularly in Denmark. It is the single most useful charging app in the country.

Good to Know

  • Denmark was one of the first European countries to build a comprehensive EV charging network, largely through Clever.
  • Wind power generates a large share of Danish electricity, making EV charging relatively green.
  • Many Danish apartment complexes are adding shared charging solutions, but access can vary.
  • Bridge and ferry tolls are not discounted for EVs in Denmark, unlike in Norway.
