EV Charger Error
What Does Plug In Before Authorizing (or Vice Versa) Mean on an EV Charger?
Updated March 2026
This is general guidance based on U.S. Department of Energy AFDC. Actual charger behavior varies by manufacturer and firmware version. Always follow on-screen instructions and contact the charging network if you are unsure. If anything looks or feels unsafe, stop charging and move away from the charger.
Some chargers require you to authorize first, then plug in. Others want you to plug in first, then authorize. Getting the order wrong can cause the session to fail or time out.
Seeing this on the charger right now?
- Don't unplug while the charger is active. Wait for the screen to update.
- Try stopping and restarting the session from the charging app or RFID card.
- If the error persists, move to a different connector or charger if available.

What to do
- Read the instructions on the charger screen or signage
- If authorization failed, try the opposite order: plug in first, then tap your card (or vice versa)
- Most DC fast chargers: authorize first, then plug in. Most AC chargers: plug in first
- Use the network's app if the order is unclear. The app usually handles it automatically
