What Does Charger Blocked by Non-EV Vehicle Mean on an EV Charger?

Updated March 2026

Share

This is general guidance based on U.S. Department of Energy AFDC. Actual charger behavior varies by manufacturer and firmware version. Always follow on-screen instructions and contact the charging network if you are unsure. If anything looks or feels unsafe, stop charging and move away from the charger.

Warning

The charging space is occupied by a non-electric vehicle (sometimes called 'ICEd', referring to Internal Combustion Engine vehicles blocking EV chargers). You cannot access the charger.

Seeing this on the charger right now?

  1. Don't unplug while the charger is active. Wait for the screen to update.
  2. Try stopping and restarting the session from the charging app or RFID card.
  3. If the error persists, move to a different connector or charger if available.

Read the full explanation below, or scan the charger screen with EVcourse for instant help.

What to do

  1. Look for another available charger at this or a nearby location
  2. Report the blocked charger in the charging network's app if there is an option
  3. In some countries, blocking a charger with a non-EV is illegal and can result in a fine
  4. Never confront other drivers aggressively. Move on and find an alternative
