Winter Range

Tesla Model 3 Winter Range

Updated March 2026

The Tesla Model 3 handles cold weather well thanks to its standard heat pump and active battery preconditioning. With a 57.5 kWh battery and 390 km rated range, expect around 280-310 km in mild cold and 250-280 km in severe cold. Drivers using our app report that preconditioning before departure makes the biggest difference in winter range. In cold weather, expect roughly 390 km at -10°C, a loss of about 27%. These are estimates and your actual range will vary. Check your vehicle's manual for exact specifications.

Range by Temperature

These are estimates based on the Tesla Model 3's battery size, efficiency, and whether it has a heat pump. Real results depend on driving style, terrain, speed, and cabin heating use.

Maximizing Winter Range

  • Use the Tesla app to precondition the car while it is still plugged in. This warms the battery and cabin using grid power, not battery power, so you leave with a full, warm battery ready for efficient driving.
  • The Model 3's heat pump is efficient at heating the cabin without draining the battery as heavily as a resistive heater. Use the climate system normally, but rely on seat heaters and steering wheel heater for personal comfort instead of cranking cabin heat to maximum.
  • Set your charge limit to 90% in winter. The extra range provides a buffer for cold-weather consumption increases, and the slightly higher charge level gives the battery management system more energy to work with.
  • Plan winter charging stops earlier than you would in summer. The Model 3's navigation system preconditions the battery before arriving at a Supercharger, which improves charging speed in cold weather.
  • Avoid letting the battery sit at a very low state of charge in freezing temperatures. Cold batteries lose available capacity temporarily, and what shows as 10% in winter may leave you with less usable range than in warm weather.
