Winter Range

BMW i5 Winter Range

Updated March 2026

The BMW i5 is well equipped for winter with its standard heat pump and active battery preconditioning. With an 81.2 kWh battery and 470 km rated range, expect around 340-375 km in mild cold and 300-340 km in severe cold. Based on what our users tell us, the i5's sedan profile and efficient heating system make it one of the more winter-capable premium EVs. In cold weather, expect roughly 423 km at -10°C, a loss of about 27%. These are estimates and your actual range will vary. Check your vehicle's manual for exact specifications.

Maximizing Winter Range

  • Use the BMW app to precondition the i5 while still plugged in. This warms the cabin and battery using grid power, preserving your full battery charge for driving.
  • The i5's standard heat pump handles cold-weather cabin heating efficiently. Use heated seats and the heated steering wheel as your primary comfort sources, and keep the overall cabin temperature moderate.
  • Set your winter charge limit to 90%. The i5's 81.2 kWh battery at 90% gives you about 340 km even in mild cold, which is a comfortable daily buffer.
  • Before fast charging in cold weather, use the navigation system to route to a charger. The i5 preconditions the battery en route, ensuring it can accept power at rates close to its 205 kW maximum.
  • The i5's sedan shape creates less aerodynamic drag than an SUV, which is an advantage in cold, dense winter air. Moderate your highway speed to maximize this aerodynamic benefit.
