Volvo EX30 Charging Issues: What to Check First
Updated March 2026
You pull up to a DC fast charger, plug in your Volvo EX30, and the screen says "Waiting for connection." Or charging starts but crawls at 20 kW instead of the 150 kW you expected. The Volvo EX30's charging speed depends heavily on battery temperature, preconditioning, and charger compatibility. Here is what to check before assuming something is wrong with your car.
Troubleshooting steps are general guidance. Actual behavior varies by model year, software version, and charger hardware. Always follow your vehicle's manual and the instructions on the charger display. EVcourse is not affiliated with any vehicle manufacturer.
Quick Fix
- Use navigation. Set the charger as your destination before driving there. The EX30 will precondition the battery during the drive for faster charging.
- Unplug and replug. Remove the CCS connector, wait 15 seconds, then reconnect firmly. Re-authenticate with your RFID card or app.
- Try a different stall. If the charger shows "Waiting for connection" for more than 60 seconds, the stall may have a fault. Move to another one.
Volvo EX30 Says "Waiting for Connection" at a Charger
"Waiting for connection" means the car and charger are trying to complete their digital handshake, and it is taking longer than expected. This is not always a fault. The EX30 and the charger need to negotiate power levels, verify the connection is safe, and authenticate your payment. This normally takes 10 to 30 seconds.
If it stays on "Waiting for connection" for more than 60 seconds, the handshake has likely failed. The most common causes are a charger firmware issue (the charger's software is not compatible or has frozen), a poor cable connection (the CCS plug is not fully seated), or a network timeout on the charger's side.
Unplug, wait 15 seconds, and try again. If the same stall fails twice, move to a different stall or a different charger entirely. Some Volvo EX30 owners have reported intermittent handshake issues with specific charger networks that were resolved by Volvo software updates. Check if your car has a pending update.
Why Is My Volvo EX30 Charging So Slowly?
Cold battery temperature is the number one reason for slow DC charging on the Volvo EX30, especially in Nordic and Northern European climates.
- → No preconditioning. If you drive a short distance to the charger or did not set it as a navigation destination, the battery may be too cold to accept high power. The EX30 preconditions automatically when you navigate to a charger. Without it, winter charging can start at 20 to 40 kW instead of 100+ kW.
- → High state of charge. Above approximately 80%, the EX30 reduces charging power significantly to protect battery health. This is normal for all lithium-ion batteries. If you are road-tripping, plan to charge from 10% to 80% for the fastest sessions.
- → Charger power sharing. If another car is charging on the same unit, the charger may split power between the two stalls. A 150 kW charger shared between two cars delivers approximately 75 kW each. Check the charger display for the actual power being delivered.
- → Charger maximum lower than car maximum. The EX30 can accept up to approximately 153 kW, but many public chargers are rated at 50 kW or 100 kW. The car cannot charge faster than the charger can deliver.
Volvo EX30 DC Fast Charging Not Working
If DC fast charging will not start at all, check the CCS connector, the charger's status display, and your payment method.
The CCS connector is larger and heavier than a Type 2 plug. Push it in straight until it clicks and locks. Never force it. If the connector is slightly off-angle, the communication pins at the top may not make proper contact, and the session will not start. Look at the car's charge port indicator: a pulsing light means it is trying to connect, a steady light means it is charging, and no light means the connection was not recognized.
Also verify that the charging session was successfully authorized. Some charger networks require you to start the session in their app or tap an RFID card before the power flows. If the charger display shows "Authorization failed" or "Session not started," the issue is with your account or payment, not the car.
Managing a team of drivers?

From Finn, engineer: Cold weather has a bigger impact on charging speed than most drivers expect. In our testing across charger brands in Nordic conditions, the difference between a preconditioned and non-preconditioned Volvo EX30 can be dramatic, sometimes doubling the time for the same charging session. Always set the charger as your navigation destination.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Volvo EX30 precondition the battery before DC fast charging?
Yes. If you set a DC fast charger as your navigation destination, the Volvo EX30 will precondition (warm or cool) the battery automatically during the drive. This can significantly improve charging speed, especially in cold weather. Without preconditioning, the battery may be too cold to accept full power, and the charger will deliver lower speeds.
What is the maximum DC fast charging speed of the Volvo EX30?
The Volvo EX30 supports DC fast charging at up to approximately 153 kW (Single Motor Extended Range). Actual speeds depend on battery temperature, state of charge, and charger capability. You will see the highest speeds between approximately 10% and 50% state of charge on a warm battery.
Does a software update fix Volvo EX30 charging issues?
Volvo regularly pushes over-the-air software updates that can fix charging compatibility issues and improve charging curve performance. Check for updates in the center display under Settings > System > Software Update. If you are experiencing consistent issues at specific charger networks, an update may resolve a known handshake problem.
