Volvo EX90 Plugged In but the Charger Will Not Start

You connected the cable to your Volvo EX90 and nothing happens. No charging indicator on the screen, no confirmation from the charger. The EX90 supports Plug & Charge and multiple authentication methods, but when none of them work, you need to troubleshoot step by step.

Quick Diagnosis

Step 1

Is the charger screen on and showing a ready state?

Check if the charger display is lit and showing "Available" or a similar ready message.

Symptoms

  • Charger displays an error after plugging in the EX90
  • Charge port LED does not light up or stays amber
  • 14.5-inch center screen shows no active charging session
  • Charger screen says 'waiting for vehicle' or shows a timeout
  • CCS connector plugs in but does not lock into the charge port

Why This Happens

Authentication not completed

Most public chargers require you to start the session with an RFID card, app, or contactless payment. Even with Plug & Charge supported, not every network has it enabled. Check the charger for payment instructions.

Charge port not fully open or obstructed

The EX90's charge port is on the left rear. If the door is not fully open, or ice and road debris are blocking the port, the connector will not seat and the car will not detect it.

Scheduled charging is active

If you have scheduled charging in the EX90's settings (for lower home electricity rates), the car will refuse to start charging outside those hours. This applies even at public chargers.

Vehicle software needs an update

The EX90 receives over-the-air updates through Google Built-In. An outdated software version can cause compatibility issues with certain charger protocols.

Charger hardware fault

The charger may look operational but have an internal fault. Screen errors, broken contactors, or failed communication modules are common, especially at older or heavily used stations.

What to Do

  1. 1

    Authenticate with the charger

Check the charger's screen for payment instructions. Tap your RFID card, open the charging network's app, or use contactless payment. Plug & Charge should activate automatically on supported networks, but if it does not, use manual authentication.

  2. 2

Check the charge port on the left rear

Open the charge port door fully. Check for ice, snow, or debris. In winter, gently clear any obstructions. Make sure the port cover is not partially blocking the connector.

  3. 3

    Seat the connector firmly

Push the CCS2 connector straight into the port until it clicks and locks. If it will not lock, pull it out and try again. Check that the connector pins are clean and undamaged.

  4. 4

    Turn off scheduled charging

On the center screen, go to Settings, then Charging. If a charging schedule is active, disable it or switch to 'charge immediately.' This is a common reason charging will not start at public chargers.

  5. 5

    Restart the charging process

Unplug the connector, lock and unlock the car using the Volvo Cars app or key, wait 15 seconds, then plug in again. This resets the charging communication.

Prevention Tips

  • Set up Plug & Charge in the Volvo Cars app for your most-used charging networks
  • Turn off scheduled charging before a road trip so public chargers work without extra steps
  • Keep the charge port clean and inspect it regularly, especially during winter
  • Install software updates promptly for the latest charger compatibility improvements
  • Always carry an RFID charging card as a backup payment method

Volvo EX90 Charging Stops Before the Battery Is Full

Your Volvo EX90 was charging and then the session stopped. Maybe it reached 80% and called it done, or the charger just cut off mid-session. With a 107 kWh battery, incomplete charging can leave you short on range. Here is how to figure out what happened and how to prevent it.

Quick Diagnosis

Step 1

Did the charger show an error code?

Check the charger screen for any error message or code.

Symptoms

  • Charging stops at 80% even though you set a higher target
  • DC fast charger ends the session after 45-60 minutes
  • Center screen shows charging stopped with no error message
  • Charger displays an error and disconnects mid-session
  • Charging slows to near zero and then stops entirely

Why This Happens

Charge limit set to 80%

The EX90 has a configurable charge limit. For daily driving, 80% is recommended to preserve battery health. If you need more for a trip, you must raise the limit before plugging in.

Charger session time limit

Many DC fast chargers enforce a 60-minute session limit. With the EX90's large 107 kWh battery, charging from low to high can take longer than 60 minutes, especially if the charger is not delivering peak power.

Battery overheating during fast charging

Sustained high-power charging on a 107 kWh battery generates significant heat. If the thermal management system cannot keep up, the car will reduce power or stop charging to protect the cells.

Communication loss with the charger

CCS fast charging requires continuous digital communication between the EX90 and the charger. Any interruption, even a brief one, triggers a safety stop.

Bidirectional charging mode conflict

The EX90 supports bidirectional charging. If vehicle-to-load or vehicle-to-home settings are active or were recently used, this can occasionally interfere with normal charging sessions.

What to Do

  1. 1

    Check your charge limit

On the 14.5-inch center screen, go to Settings, then Charging. Raise the charge limit to 100% if you need a full charge for your trip. Set it back to 80% afterward for daily use.

  2. 2

    Check for charger time limits

Look at the charger's screen or the charging app for session duration limits. If the charger has a 60-minute limit, plan to restart the session or choose a charger without time restrictions.

  3. 3

    Check for bidirectional charging settings

If you have used the EX90's bidirectional charging features recently, check that V2L or V2H mode is turned off in the car's settings before plugging in at a public charger.

  4. 4

    Restart the charging session

Unplug the connector, wait 15-20 seconds, plug in again, and re-authenticate. A fresh session resets the communication and often resolves mid-session stops.

  5. 5

Let the battery cool if needed

If you have been fast charging after a long highway drive or a previous fast charge, the battery temperature may be too high. Wait 10-15 minutes before starting a new session.

Prevention Tips

  • Adjust your charge limit before a road trip so the car does not stop at 80% when you need more range
  • Precondition the battery through navigation to reduce thermal stress during charging
  • Choose chargers without strict session time limits for the EX90's large battery
  • Avoid back-to-back DC fast charging sessions to keep battery temperature manageable
  • Keep the car's software updated for the latest charging protocol improvements

Volvo EX90 Charger Payment Failed or Card Declined

You are at a public charger with your Volvo EX90 and the payment will not go through. The card reader rejects your card, the app throws an error, or Plug & Charge just does not activate. Payment issues at public chargers are one of the most common frustrations, and they have nothing to do with your car's charging system.

Quick Diagnosis

Step 1

Are you using the network's own app?

Using the charging network's own app is usually the cheapest and most reliable option.

Symptoms

  • Charger screen shows 'payment failed' or 'card declined'
  • Plug & Charge does not activate when you connect the cable
  • Charging app shows a payment error or insufficient balance
  • Contactless payment terminal does not respond
  • You cannot find any way to pay at the charger

Why This Happens

Pre-authorization hold exceeds available balance

Many chargers place a temporary hold of 50-150 EUR before charging starts. With the EX90's large 107 kWh battery, some chargers place larger holds. If your available balance is too low, the hold will be declined.

Plug & Charge not set up or unsupported network

The EX90 supports Plug & Charge, but it requires setup through the Volvo Cars app and only works on specific networks. If the network does not support it, you need to pay manually.

Charging app payment method expired or invalid

If your credit card on file in the charging app has expired, been replaced, or the app needs an update, payment will fail when you try to start a session.

Contactless terminal not working

Outdoor payment terminals at chargers are exposed to weather and heavy use. They frequently malfunction, especially in cold or wet conditions.

Cross-border payment restrictions

When traveling to other countries, some charging networks only accept local bank cards or specific payment methods. Your home country card may be blocked by the network or by your bank's fraud prevention.

What to Do

  1. 1

Check Plug & Charge status in the Volvo Cars app

Open the Volvo Cars app and verify that Plug & Charge is enabled with a valid payment method. If the network supports it, try unplugging and reconnecting. If not, proceed to manual payment.

  2. 2

    Try a different payment method

Use a different credit or debit card, your phone's mobile wallet, or the charging network's app. Having multiple options avoids being stuck when one fails.

  3. 3

    Check for pre-authorization holds

Open your banking app and look for pending charges from the charging network. Multiple failed attempts may have placed several holds, reducing your available balance. Contact your bank if needed.

  4. 4

Use the charging network's app instead

Find the network name on the charger. Download their app, create an account, add a payment method, and start the session through the app. This bypasses the physical payment terminal entirely.

  5. 5

    Tap your RFID charging card

If you carry an RFID card from a charging provider or roaming service, tap it on the charger's card reader. RFID cards are often more reliable than apps or contactless terminals.

Prevention Tips

  • Set up Plug & Charge in the Volvo Cars app and check which networks support it along your usual routes
  • Carry at least two payment methods: an RFID charging card and a bank card with sufficient available balance
  • Update payment details in your charging apps before road trips, not at the charger
  • Inform your bank before international trips to avoid fraud blocks on charging pre-authorization holds
  • Download and set up apps for major charging networks before you leave home

Volvo EX90 Charging Slower Than Expected at DC or AC

You plugged in your Volvo EX90 expecting 250 kW and the 14.5-inch screen shows 60 kW. Or your wallbox is only delivering 3 kW instead of 11 kW. The EX90 has one of the fastest charging speeds in its class, but reaching that peak depends on battery temperature, state of charge, and the charger itself.

Quick Diagnosis

Step 1

Is your battery above 80%?

Charging slows down significantly above 80% to protect battery health. This is normal.

Symptoms

  • DC fast charging speed well below the 250 kW maximum
  • AC home charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of 11 kW
  • Charging speed drops sharply after reaching 40-50%
  • Center screen shows lower power than the charger's rated output
  • Charging session starts strong but slows down within 10 minutes

Why This Happens

Battery too cold or too hot

The EX90's 107 kWh battery is very sensitive to temperature for peak charging speeds. Below 20C, you may see significantly reduced DC charging power. The heat pump helps but cannot warm the battery instantly.

Preconditioning not activated

The EX90 can precondition its battery for fast charging when you set a charger as your navigation destination. Without preconditioning, especially in cold weather, the battery will not be warm enough to accept 250 kW.

State of charge above 50-60%

The EX90's 400V architecture means the peak 250 kW charging speed is only available at lower states of charge, typically 10-30%. Above 50%, the power starts tapering. Above 80%, it drops to under 50 kW.

Charger cannot deliver 250 kW

Many DC fast chargers are rated at 50 kW, 100 kW, or 150 kW. The EX90 can only charge as fast as the charger allows. Check the charger's rated output before expecting 250 kW.

AC charger wired for single-phase

The EX90 supports 3-phase AC charging at 11 kW. If your home wallbox is connected to a single-phase supply, maximum AC speed is around 3.7 kW.

What to Do

  1. 1

Set the charger as your navigation destination

Use Google Maps on the 14.5-inch center screen to navigate to the charging station. The EX90 will start preconditioning the battery automatically during the drive, preparing it for peak charging speed.

  2. 2

    Check the charger's rated power

Before plugging in, check the charger's label or the app for its maximum output. If the charger is rated at 150 kW, your EX90 cannot charge faster than 150 kW regardless of its 250 kW capability.

  3. 3

    Check your state of charge

For the fastest charging, arrive between 10-20%. The EX90's peak speeds are available at lower states of charge. Above 80%, charging will slow significantly.

  4. 4

Verify the charger is not sharing power

Many chargers split power between two connectors. If someone is using the adjacent stall, both cars get reduced speeds. Move to a charger with both stalls free.

  5. 5

    Check AC charge current settings

If charging slowly on AC, check the EX90's settings to ensure the charge current limiter is set to maximum. Also verify your wallbox is properly wired for 3-phase.

  6. 6

    Try a higher-powered charger

To take advantage of the EX90's 250 kW capability, look for chargers rated at 300 kW or higher. These are available from networks like Ionity, Fastned, and others.

Prevention Tips

  • Always route to chargers through Google Maps to trigger automatic battery preconditioning
  • Look for 300 kW+ chargers to take full advantage of the EX90's 250 kW peak charging speed
  • Plan road trip stops to arrive at chargers between 10-20% state of charge
  • Avoid charging above 80% on road trips, the time spent on the last 20% is rarely worth the extra range
  • Confirm your home wallbox supports 3-phase 11 kW AC charging

Volvo EX90 Wrong Charging Connector or Plug Will Not Fit

You pulled up to a charger in your Volvo EX90 and the connector does not fit, or you are not sure which cable to grab. The EX90 uses a CCS2 (Combo 2) port on the left rear for both DC fast charging and AC charging. Here is how to identify the right plug every time.

Quick Diagnosis

Step 1

Do you need fast charging (DC)?

DC fast charging is for quick top-ups during trips (usually 20-40 minutes). For overnight or workplace charging, AC is fine.

Symptoms

  • Connector physically does not fit into the EX90's charge port
  • Charger has multiple cables and you are unsure which one to use
  • Connector plugs in but charging does not start
  • The charger only has CHAdeMO or Type 1 connectors
  • Tesla Supercharger connector does not match your EX90

Why This Happens

CHAdeMO connector at the station

CHAdeMO is a DC fast charging standard used by some older Nissan and Mitsubishi EVs. It is physically incompatible with the EX90's CCS2 port and no adapter exists.

Type 1 (J1772) AC connector

Type 1 is a single-phase AC connector common in North America and some older European installations. The EX90 uses Type 2 for AC, which is the upper part of the CCS2 port.

Tesla proprietary Supercharger

Older Tesla Superchargers use a proprietary connector. In Europe, newer Tesla Superchargers use CCS2 and may be open to non-Tesla vehicles. Check the network's app for access.

Connector inserted at wrong angle

The CCS2 connector must be inserted straight, with the DC pins at the bottom. Inserting at an angle or upside down will prevent it from fitting.

Port obstructed by ice or debris

The charge port on the left rear can accumulate ice, road salt, or debris, especially in winter. This prevents the connector from seating fully.

What to Do

  1. 1

Identify which connectors your EX90 uses

The Volvo EX90 uses CCS2 for DC fast charging (up to 250 kW) and Type 2 for AC charging (up to 11 kW). Both share the same port on the left rear. The CCS2 connector includes the Type 2 portion plus two extra DC pins below.

  2. 2

Select the correct cable at the charger

At a DC fast charger, grab the cable labeled CCS or CCS2. Ignore the CHAdeMO cable if one is present. At an AC destination charger, use the Type 2 cable.

  3. 3

Align and insert the connector properly

Hold the CCS2 connector with the larger DC pins facing down. Push it straight into the port until you feel it click and lock. Do not insert at an angle.

  4. 4

Clear the charge port if blocked

If the connector will not seat, check for ice, salt, or debris in the port. Wipe it clean with a soft cloth. In freezing conditions, warm the port area briefly with your hands.

  5. 5

    Find a compatible charger nearby

If the station lacks a CCS2 connector, use Google Maps on the EX90's center screen or a charging app to find the nearest station with CCS2. Filter by connector type to avoid this issue.

Prevention Tips

  • Remember that your EX90 uses CCS2 for DC and Type 2 for AC, both in the same port on the left rear
  • Filter for CCS connectors when planning charger stops on road trips
  • Check Tesla Supercharger access for non-Tesla vehicles through the Tesla app before counting on them
  • Keep the charge port cover closed when not charging to prevent ice and debris buildup
  • Download charger finder apps that let you filter by connector type before your trip
