Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 supports up to 263 kW DC charging. K-Lataus chargers deliver up to 200 kW. The network's maximum power is lower than what the car can accept, so your effective speed tops out at 200 kW.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Charger Will Not Start a Charging Session

You have plugged the cable into your IONIQ 5's charge port on the right rear fender, but nothing is happening. No power flowing, no charging animation on the cluster. This is frustrating, but it is rarely the car. Most failed charging starts come from the charger, the app, or a setting on the vehicle. Here is how to work through it.

What to Do

    Press the button on the charge port door on the right rear fender. If it will not open in cold weather, try pressing and holding the unlock button on your key fob, or gently warm the edges with your hands or lukewarm water. Do not force it open or use sharp tools.

    On the center touchscreen, go to EV settings and check if a charging schedule is active. You can also check in the Bluelink app under the charging section. Disable the schedule temporarily to charge immediately.

    Unplug and reconnect the cable firmly

    Remove the cable completely, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Push the CCS2 connector in until it clicks into the charge port. Make sure both the upper (AC) and lower (DC) sections are fully seated.

    Tap your RFID card again, restart the charging app, or try a different payment method. If the charger supports Plug and Charge and your IONIQ 5 has it enabled, try unplugging and replugging to re-trigger automatic authentication.

You are at the charger, cable in hand, and the screen says payment failed or authentication error. Your IONIQ 5 is ready to charge, but the charger will not let you start. This is almost always a charger-side or app-side issue, not a car problem. Here is how to get charging.

    If your RFID card failed, try the app's QR code or start-via-app feature. If the app failed, try tapping your RFID card. If you have a contactless bank card, try that. Having at least two methods available saves time.

    On the center touchscreen, go to EV settings and look for the Plug and Charge option. Make sure it is turned on. Then check if the charging network supports Plug and Charge. If both are set up, unplug the CCS2 cable and plug it back in to re-trigger authentication.

    Some chargers have a reset option on the screen or a physical button. If the charger seems stuck from a previous session, restarting it can clear the error. Check the charger screen for a reset or cancel option.

    If authentication keeps failing on one charger, try a different stall at the same station. Charger hardware varies even within the same location, and another unit may process your payment without issues.

    Most chargers display a phone number or support contact on the screen or on a sticker. Call or message the network's support to report the issue. They can sometimes remotely start a session or clear a stuck charger from their side.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Charging Slower Than Expected at DC or AC

Your IONIQ 5 has one of the fastest charging architectures on the market. 800V, up to 233 kW, 10-80% in roughly 18 minutes. So when the screen shows 50 kW at a fast charger, something feels wrong. In most cases, slow charging on the IONIQ 5 is not a defect. It is usually the battery temperature, the charger's actual output, or a setting worth checking.

  • DC fast charging speed well below the 233 kW maximum
  • AC home or destination charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of 11 kW
  • Charging speed drops sharply after reaching 60-70%
  • Charging session starts at low power and never ramps up
  • Instrument cluster shows much lower power than the charger's rated output

What to Do

    Check the battery temperature on the cluster

    Look at the charging information on your 12.3-inch instrument cluster or center touchscreen. If the battery temperature is low, consider driving for 15-20 minutes before your next charging stop, or use the built-in navigation to trigger battery preconditioning automatically.

    Confirm the charger supports 800V

    Check the charger's specifications on its screen or the charging network's app. If it is a 400V charger, the IONIQ 5's multi-charging system will still work, but speeds will be lower than on an 800V unit. No adapter needed.

    If you are above 80%, the slowdown is expected. For the fastest road trip charging, plan stops so you arrive between 10-20% and unplug at 80%.

    Check scheduled charging and charge limits

    Open the EV settings on the center touchscreen or in the Bluelink app. Make sure scheduled charging is not active (it can delay charging start) and the charge current limit is set to maximum.

    Look at the charger unit. If two cables come from the same cabinet and someone is using the other one, you may be splitting power. Move to an unoccupied charger if available.

Common K-Lataus Issues

Session fails to start or charger shows an error

The charger does not begin charging after you plug in and authenticate. This can happen due to communication issues between your vehicle and the charger, or a problem with authentication.

  • You plug in and authenticate but the charger displays an error
  • The charger screen stays on the welcome screen and does not proceed
  • The app shows 'session starting' but nothing happens at the charger
  • The connector locks but no power flows

    Unplug, wait 30 seconds, and try again

    The initial communication handshake between your vehicle and the charger sometimes fails. Unplug the connector, wait at least 30 seconds, and reconnect. The second attempt often works.

    Try starting the session from the K-Lataus app

    If RFID authentication is not working, open the K-Lataus app, select the station and charger, and start the session through the app instead.

    Try a different charger unit at the same station

    If the station has multiple charger units, switch to another one. One unit may have a hardware issue while the others work fine.

    Check that your vehicle is ready to charge

Setting up the K-Lataus app for the first time

K-Lataus has its own dedicated app. First-time setup requires a K-Group account and a payment method linked specifically to the K-Lataus service.

  • Your K-Group login works on the K-Group website but not in the K-Lataus app
  • You cannot find a way to add a payment method for charging
  • You cannot find the K-Lataus app in your app store

How to Fix It

    Install the K-Lataus app

    Search for 'K-Lataus' in the App Store or Google Play and install it. This is the dedicated app for K-Lataus EV charging. K-Ruoka is for groceries, not for charging.

    Log in with your K-Group credentials

    Use the same K-Group username and password you use for other K-Group services. If you do not have a K-Group account yet, you can create one in the app.

    Add a payment method in the K-Lataus app

    Go to payment settings in the K-Lataus app and add a credit or debit card. The K-Lataus app manages its own payment methods separately from other K-Group services.

Parking time limits at grocery store locations

K-Lataus chargers sit in K-Citymarket and K-Market parking lots, which often have monitored parking with time limits. You may get a parking notice if you stay too long.

  • You see parking time limit signs (e.g. 2 or 3 hours) in the parking lot
  • You received a parking notice even though you were charging
  • Your charging session takes longer than the allowed parking time
  • Camera-monitored parking is active in the lot

    Check the parking rules when you arrive

    Most K-Citymarket and K-Market parking lots have posted time limits, often 2 to 4 hours, enforced by camera monitoring or a parking operator. These rules apply to EV charging spots too.

    Many Finnish parking lots still require a parking disc (pysäköintikiekko). Set the arrival time and display it on your dashboard, even if the lot also has camera monitoring.

    If you are shopping while charging, set an alarm so you can return before the parking limit expires. A DC fast charger at 200 kW should get you a substantial charge well within a 2-hour window.

    Do not leave your vehicle occupying the charging spot after it finishes. Other EV drivers need the spot, and some parking operators treat finished-but-still-connected vehicles as overstaying.

New stations not appearing in third-party apps

K-Lataus is expanding its network, but newer stations sometimes take weeks to appear in third-party apps and aggregators like PlugShare or Google Maps.

  • The K-Lataus app shows a station that does not appear in PlugShare or ABRP
  • You planned a route using a third-party app and it skipped a nearby K-Lataus station
  • A station listed as 'coming soon' in the K-Lataus app is actually already operational
  • Google Maps does not show K-Lataus chargers at a location where you know they exist

    The K-Lataus app is always the most up-to-date source for K-Lataus stations. Third-party apps rely on data feeds that may lag behind actual station openings by days or weeks.

    The K-Lataus website also maintains a station map. Check it if the app is not giving you the information you need or if you want to plan ahead on a larger screen.

Some older K-Lataus charger units perform less reliably in extreme cold. Winter in Finland brings temperatures that can affect both the charger hardware and your vehicle's battery.

  • Your charging history in the K-Lataus app shows energy delivered, duration, and cost per session. Use it to track your charging patterns and costs over time.
  • Make sure your K-Lataus app is updated regularly. K-Group adds new stations and features, and an outdated app may miss the latest additions.
