Why Your Charging Speed May Differ

The Citroën ë-Berlingo supports up to 100 kW DC charging. Badenova chargers deliver up to 200 kW. Your car's maximum intake is the limiting factor here, capping speed at 100 kW even on a faster charger.

  • Charging slows down above 80% state of charge on most EVs, including the Citroën ë-Berlingo.
  • Cold weather reduces charging speed. Preconditioning may not be available on all Citroën ë-Berlingo variants.
  • If multiple cars share the same Badenova station, power may be split between stalls.

Citroën ë-Berlingo Charging Problems

Citroën ë-Berlingo Charger Will Not Start Charging

You plugged in the CCS2 cable, the app says the session started, but nothing is happening. Or you tapped your card and the charger just blinks without delivering power. This is frustrating when you need to get back on your delivery route. Most charger start failures on the ë-Berlingo come down to authentication, cable locking, or the charger itself.

Symptoms

  • CCS2 connector plugged in but charger shows no active session
  • Charger display shows an error code after tapping RFID card or using the app
  • Dashboard shows the charge port is connected but charging does not begin
  • Cable does not lock into the CCS2 port on the ë-Berlingo
  • Charger starts briefly then immediately stops with an error

What to Do

  1. 1

Remove and reseat the CCS2 connector

Pull the connector out completely, wait 10 seconds, and push it back in firmly until you hear or feel a click. Make sure the charge port flap is fully open and nothing is blocking the port.

  2. 2

    Check for a charging schedule

On the ë-Berlingo's touchscreen, go to the charging settings. If a charging schedule is active, disable it or select "Charge now" to override the timer.

  3. 3

    Re-authenticate with the charger

End any active session in the charging app, then start a new session. If using RFID, hold the card steady against the reader for 3-4 seconds. Some chargers require you to authenticate before plugging in, not after.

  4. 4

Check the charger status on the network app

Open the charging network's app and check if the charger is showing as available. If it shows an error or offline status, do not waste time troubleshooting. Move to a different charger.

  5. 5

Try the other connector or stall

If the charger has two stalls or both a CCS2 and CHAdeMO connector, try the other option. Sometimes one stall works while the other is faulty.

  6. 6

    Restart the vehicle systems

Turn the ë-Berlingo fully off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Unplug and replug the cable. This resets the charging communication between the car and the charger.

Citroën ë-Berlingo Charging Payment Failed at DC

You tapped your card, the charger beeped, and then showed a payment error. Or the app keeps spinning without starting the session. Payment failures at public chargers are rarely about your ë-Berlingo. They are almost always about the charging network, your payment method, or mobile signal. Here is how to get charging and get back on your route.

Symptoms

  • Charger displays a payment error or 'transaction declined' message
  • Charging app shows 'session failed to start' after payment attempt
  • RFID card is not recognized by the charger reader
  • Contactless bank card payment does not register
  • Charger starts the authorization process but times out before delivering power

What to Do

  1. 1

    Try a different payment method

If your RFID card failed, try the charging app. If the app failed, try a contactless bank card directly on the charger's reader. Having two or three payment options saves time when one does not work.

  2. 2

    Check your mobile signal

Look at your phone's signal indicator. If you have weak or no signal, the app cannot communicate with the charger. Try moving your phone closer to the charger or stepping away from walls and structures that block signal.

  3. 3

Verify your payment details in the app

Open the charging app and check your payment method. Make sure your card has not expired and that there are no pending issues. Update your card details if needed.

  4. 4

Check which networks the charger accepts

Look at the charger or surrounding signage for logos of accepted charging networks. If your provider is not listed, you may need to use a different app or card that has a roaming agreement with this charger.

  5. 5

Contact your fleet manager or charging provider

If you are using a company-provided RFID card and it does not work, the card may be deactivated or restricted. Contact your fleet manager or the charging provider's support line. Most providers have a number printed on the RFID card.

  6. 6

    Use an alternative charger nearby

If payment is not working at this station, check your app for the nearest alternative charger on your route. Do not spend too long troubleshooting a single charger when another one is nearby.

Citroën ë-Berlingo Charging Slower Than Expected

You stopped for a quick top-up between deliveries and the charger shows 20 kW instead of the 100 kW you expected. The ë-Berlingo's 50 kWh battery can charge at up to 100 kW on DC, but real-world speeds depend on temperature, state of charge, and the charger itself. Slow charging is rarely a defect. It is usually something you can identify and sometimes fix on the spot.

Symptoms

  • DC fast charging speed well below the 100 kW maximum
  • AC charging stuck at 3-4 kW instead of the full 11 kW
  • Charging speed drops sharply after reaching 50-60% on the dashboard
  • Charging session starts at a decent speed then slows down within minutes
  • Charger display shows lower power than its rated output

What to Do

  1. 1

    Check the battery temperature indicator

Look at the dashboard or the MyCitroën app for battery temperature information. If the battery is cold, driving for 15-20 minutes before charging can help. The ë-Berlingo does not precondition the battery automatically, so plan your charging stop after some driving rather than first thing in the morning.

  2. 2

    Check your state of charge

Look at the battery percentage on the dashboard. If you are above 80%, the slower speed is expected. For the fastest charging during your delivery route, arrive at the charger between 10-20% and charge to 80%.

  3. 3

Verify the charger is not sharing power

Look at the charger unit. If there are two cables and someone is using the other one, you may be sharing power. Move to an unoccupied charger if one is available.

  4. 4

Check the AC charge current setting

On the ë-Berlingo's touchscreen, check the charging settings. Make sure the AC charge current is set to maximum. A reduced setting will limit your depot or home charging speed.

  5. 5

    Confirm your wallbox phase configuration

If depot charging seems slow, ask your facility manager or electrician to verify the wallbox is wired for 3-phase power. Single-phase limits you to about 3.7 kW, which means roughly 14 hours for a full charge instead of about 5 hours.

  6. 6

    Try a different charger

If the speed is still low on DC, the charger itself may be degraded or faulty. Try a different stall at the same location or a different charging station on your route.

Common Badenova Issues

App-only payment with no backup option at the charger

Badenova chargers require the Badenova app to start a session. There is no contactless card reader on the charger and no RFID option. If the app is not working, you cannot charge.

Symptoms

  • The charger has no contactless payment terminal or RFID reader
  • You do not have the Badenova app installed and cannot download it at the station
  • The app will not load or crashes when trying to start a session
  • You have no mobile data signal at the station and cannot use the app

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Install and set up the Badenova app before you need it

Download the Badenova app and create an account with a valid payment method before your first visit. Trying to set up an account at the station, possibly with poor signal, is a frustrating experience you can avoid.

  2. 2

Try connecting to Wi-Fi if your mobile data is weak

Some Badenova stations or nearby businesses may offer Wi-Fi. If your mobile data is too weak to load the app, look for available networks. Even a slow connection is enough to start a session.

  3. 3

Restart the app or your phone

If the app crashes or freezes, close it completely and reopen it. If that does not help, restart your phone. App-only chargers depend entirely on your phone working, so basic troubleshooting matters.

  4. 4

Drive to an alternative charger with contactless payment

If the app is genuinely broken or you have no signal, you need a charger that accepts contactless payment or RFID. Check another charging app (Ionity, EnBW mobility+, or a roaming app) for the nearest alternative station. This is the downside of app-only networks: no app, no charge.

  5. 5

Check if a roaming app supports Badenova stations

Some roaming platforms (like EnBW mobility+ or Maingau) may include Badenova stations. If you already have a roaming app installed, search for the station there. You can sometimes start a session through a roaming app when the native app is not cooperating.

Regional coverage limited to southwestern Germany

Badenova's network is concentrated in the Baden-Württemberg region, especially around Freiburg, the Upper Rhine area, and surrounding towns. Outside this region, you will not find Badenova chargers.

Symptoms

  • The Badenova app shows no stations outside the Freiburg/Baden region
  • You assumed Badenova coverage would extend along the Autobahn but it does not
  • The nearest Badenova station is 100 km or more from your destination
  • You are driving through Germany and planned stops based on Badenova but ran into coverage gaps

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Check Badenova coverage before planning your route

Open the Badenova app and look at the station map. You will see that coverage is regional, not national. If your trip extends beyond southwestern Germany, you need additional networks.

  2. 2

Install apps for national German networks

For travel across Germany, install EnBW mobility+ (large national network), Ionity (Autobahn-focused), or Fastned. These networks have stations along major highways throughout the country.

  3. 3

Use a roaming app for multi-network access

EnBW mobility+ and Maingau EinfachStromLaden work as roaming apps that access chargers from dozens of operators. One app covers you across Germany instead of installing a separate app for each regional operator.

  4. 4

Plan with a multi-network route planner for longer trips

A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) shows chargers from all operators. Enter your vehicle model and destination to get optimized stops. Badenova stations will appear where they exist, and other networks fill the gaps.

App interface in German only

The Badenova app is designed for the German market and the interface is in German. If German is not your language, navigating the app takes extra effort.

Symptoms

  • All app menus and buttons are in German
  • Error messages from the charger (shown in the app) are in German
  • You cannot find the 'start session' button because labels are in German
  • Account setup and payment forms are in German

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Learn the key German charging terms

'Laden starten' means start charging. 'Laden beenden' means stop charging. 'Verfügbar' means available. 'Besetzt' means occupied. 'Außer Betrieb' means out of order. 'Bezahlung' means payment. These cover most of what you need.

  2. 2

Set up your account at home with a translation tool open

Create your Badenova account and add your payment method at home where you can take your time. Use Google Translate or a similar tool to translate the forms. You only need to do this once.

  3. 3

Use your phone's built-in app translation

On Android, the system can translate app interfaces into your language. On iOS, you can screenshot any page and use the built-in translation feature. This helps with settings you do not visit often.

  4. 4

    Memorize the session flow

The flow is the same every time: open app, find station on map, select charger, tap start. Once you know the sequence, the German labels are less of a barrier. Practice at home before your first real session.

Stations at company premises with limited access hours

Some Badenova chargers are installed at business locations or company parking areas that have restricted access during evenings, weekends, or holidays.

Symptoms

  • You arrived at a station and the parking area is gated or locked
  • The charger is accessible during business hours but not when you need it
  • The app shows the station as available but you physically cannot reach it
  • Weekend or holiday access is restricted

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Check the station details in the app for access hours

Some Badenova stations list opening hours or access restrictions in the station details. Before driving there, look for notes about access times, especially if you plan to charge in the evening, early morning, or on weekends.

  2. 2

Look for a gate code or intercom

Some company premises with public chargers provide a gate code or intercom button for EV drivers. Check the station listing in the app or look for instructions near the gate entrance.

  3. 3

Drive to a publicly accessible alternative

If the station is behind a locked gate, your only option is to find another charger. Check the Badenova app or a roaming app for the next nearest station that is on a public road or in a publicly accessible parking area.

  4. 4

Prefer stations at public locations when planning ahead

For reliability, prioritize Badenova stations that are on public streets or at commercial locations (supermarkets, public parking garages). These are accessible 24/7 regardless of business hours.

Fewer fallback stations when a charger is broken

Badenova is a smaller regional network. If the charger you planned to use is out of order, the next Badenova station may be far away. Larger networks offer more alternatives within a short drive.

Symptoms

  • You arrived and the charger shows 'Außer Betrieb' (out of order)
  • The next Badenova station is 20 km or more away
  • You do not have another charging app installed
  • Your battery is low and you need to charge now

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Check for other Badenova stations nearby

Open the Badenova app and look at the map for alternative stations in the area. Even in their core region, stations may be spaced 10 to 30 km apart.

  2. 2

Search for chargers from other operators

Open a roaming app (EnBW mobility+, Maingau, or Chargemap) and search for any available fast charger nearby, regardless of operator. In Baden-Württemberg, EnBW has good coverage that often fills Badenova's gaps.

  3. 3

Look for AC chargers as a last resort

If no DC fast charger is available, an AC charger at a hotel, parking garage, or public lot can add enough range to reach the next working fast charger. It is slower, but it keeps you moving.

  4. 4

Report the broken charger in the Badenova app

Let Badenova know the charger is out of order. Smaller networks depend on user reports to dispatch maintenance. Your report helps the next driver.

  5. 5

Always have a backup network app installed

With any smaller regional network, carry at least one additional charging app (like EnBW mobility+ or Ionity) as insurance. Setting this up takes five minutes and saves you from being stranded.

Badenova App Tips

  • Set up the Badenova app and add your payment method before your first visit. The app is the only way to start a session at Badenova chargers, so do not wait until you are at the station.
  • Check the station details in the app for access hours. Some Badenova chargers are at company premises that close in the evening or on weekends.
  • The app shows real-time charger status. 'Verfügbar' means available, 'Besetzt' means occupied, 'Außer Betrieb' means out of order. Check before driving.
  • If the app is not loading, try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some phone network configurations cause issues with the app's connection to the charger.

Payment Tips

  • Badenova is app-only. There is no contactless reader or RFID option at the charger. If your phone is dead or has no signal, you cannot charge here.
  • Add your payment card to the Badenova app in advance. The app needs a valid payment method to start any session.
  • Check if a roaming app (like EnBW mobility+ or Maingau) includes Badenova stations. This gives you a second way to start a session if the Badenova app has issues.
  • Badenova pricing is per kWh. The current rate is shown in the app before you start. No hidden charges.
