Charging Network

Ionity in Italy

Updated March 2026

Ionity has stations along Italy's autostrade highway network, with chargers delivering up to 350 kW. Coverage is strongest in the northern regions and along the main north-south corridors. Drivers using our app note that charging infrastructure in southern Italy is still catching up, so planning stops ahead of time is important for trips below Rome. Ionity stations are a reliable choice on busy routes like the A1 (Milan to Naples).

Ionity's ad-hoc rate is about 0.75 EUR per kWh. The Italian DC fast-charging average is approximately 0.60 EUR per kWh, making Ionity moderately more expensive. Home electricity in Italy is around 0.27 EUR per kWh, so Ionity fast charging costs roughly three times the home rate.

Tips for Charging with Ionity in Italy

  • All Ionity stations use CCS2, the European DC fast-charging standard.
  • Charging coverage is concentrated in northern Italy. If heading south of Rome, plan your stops carefully.
  • Italian autostrade have tolls. Budget for both tolls and charging costs on longer trips.
  • Contactless card payment works at most Ionity stations. In Italy, where cash was traditionally preferred, this is a welcome convenience.
  • Summer heat can warm your battery during long Autostrada drives. Excessive battery temperature may cause the car to reduce charging speed.

Common Issues

  • Coverage in southern Italy and the islands (Sicily, Sardinia) is limited. Do not count on finding an Ionity station off the main corridor.
  • Summer heat can cause the car to throttle charging speed to protect the battery. Early morning or evening charging sessions may be faster.
  • Some autostrade rest areas have confusing layouts. Look for EV charging signs when entering the service area.
  • Ionity's ad-hoc rate is above the Italian average. Check if roaming through another provider offers a better price.

Italy's fast-charging network is expanding, with other operators also building out along the autostrade and major roads.
