Ionity in Hungary

Updated March 2026

Ionity operates fast-charging stations along Hungary's main motorway corridors, with chargers delivering up to 350 kW. Hungary is an important transit country connecting Western Europe to the Balkans and Romania. Drivers using our app find Ionity stations useful when crossing the country on the M1 (Vienna to Budapest) or M7 (Budapest to Lake Balaton), though coverage is less dense than in Western Europe.

How to Pay at Ionity in Hungary

Ionity in Hungary accepts the Ionity app, contactless bank cards, and Plug & Charge. Since Hungary uses HUF, paying by contactless card means your bank handles the EUR to HUF conversion. This is typically the simplest payment method for transit travelers.

Ionity's ad-hoc rate is about 0.75 EUR per kWh. The Hungarian DC fast-charging average is around 0.40 EUR per kWh, making Ionity roughly double the local rate. Home electricity in Hungary is very affordable at approximately 0.12 EUR per kWh, so the gap between home and public fast charging is one of the largest in Europe.

Tips for Charging with Ionity in Hungary

  • All Ionity stations use CCS2 connectors, the European DC fast-charging standard.
  • Hungary uses HUF, but Ionity prices in EUR. Your bank converts the amount if paying by contactless card.
  • A motorway vignette (e-matrica) is required on Hungarian motorways. Buy it online before your trip.
  • If transiting through Hungary from Austria to Romania or the Balkans, identify Ionity stops ahead of time, as spacing between stations can be long.
  • Contactless payment is available and avoids app-related issues.

Common Issues

  • Ionity's per-kWh rate is nearly double the Hungarian average. Local operators are significantly cheaper.
  • Station coverage in Hungary is thinner than in Western Europe. Do not assume there will be a fallback nearby.
  • Currency conversion from EUR to HUF can include bank fees. Check your card terms before traveling.
  • Hot summers can also affect charging speeds. If your battery is very warm after highway driving in 35+ degree heat, the car may limit charging power.

Domestic and regional charging networks are expanding rapidly in Hungary and often offer lower per-kWh prices.
