MG ZS EV Won't Charge? Fixes for Common Electric Car Charging Problems

Updated March 2026

You plug in your MG ZS EV and nothing happens. No light, no charging, no explanation. The most common reason is a charging timer or schedule that prevents the car from starting immediately. This catches new MG owners off guard because the car looks plugged in and ready, but the software is waiting for a specific time window. Here is how to check that first, plus fixes for other common MG ZS EV charging problems.

Troubleshooting steps are general guidance. Actual behavior varies by model year, software version, and charger hardware. Always follow your vehicle's manual and the instructions on the charger display. EVcourse is not affiliated with any vehicle manufacturer.

Quick Fix

  1. Check charging timer. Go to Settings > Charging on the infotainment screen. If a timer is active, the car will only charge during those hours. Disable it or adjust the window.
  2. Look at the charge port light. Amber or orange means plugged in but waiting. Flashing green means actively charging. Red means a fault.
  3. Unplug and replug. Remove the cable, wait 15 seconds, then reconnect firmly until you hear the click. Try locking and unlocking the car before plugging back in.

Why Does My MG ZS EV Stop Charging at Night?

A charging schedule set in the car's software is the most likely cause. The MG ZS EV has a built-in timer that lets you set charging windows, usually to take advantage of cheaper electricity rates at night. If you set a timer and then forget about it, the car will refuse to charge outside those hours.

To check: open the infotainment system, go to Settings, then Charging. Look for "Charge Timer" or "Scheduled Charging." If a schedule is active, you will see specific start and end times. Either disable the timer entirely or widen the window to cover the hours you need.

Some MG ZS EV owners also report that after a software update, the timer resets or activates unexpectedly. If your car was charging fine and suddenly stops, check the timer first, even if you never set one yourself.

MG ZS EV Not Charging When Plugged In

If the timer is off and the car still will not charge, the problem is usually the connection or the charger itself. Here is what to check.

  • Charge port latch. The MG ZS EV locks the cable when charging starts. If the latch does not engage, the car may refuse to begin. Push the connector in firmly. If the port flap does not open cleanly, check for ice or debris around the port.
  • Home charger amperage. The MG ZS EV's onboard charger accepts up to approximately 7 kW on the standard model and approximately 11 kW on the Long Range (model year dependent). If your home wallbox is set to a lower amperage or there is a supply issue, charging may not start. Check the wallbox indicator lights.
  • 12V battery. A weak 12V auxiliary battery can prevent the charging system from initializing. This is more common in cars that have sat unused for a few weeks. If the infotainment system is sluggish or the car takes longer than usual to "wake up," the 12V battery may need attention.

Why Is My MG ZS EV Charging So Slowly?

Slow charging on the MG ZS EV usually comes down to the charger's power output, battery temperature, or state of charge.

  • AC charging cap. The standard MG ZS EV accepts up to approximately 7 kW AC. Even if your home charger or public charger can deliver 22 kW, the car's onboard charger will limit it. This is normal, not a fault.
  • Cold battery. In winter, battery temperatures below approximately 10°C cause the car to reduce charging speed to protect the cells. The MG ZS EV does not have an active battery preconditioning system on all model years, so charging in cold weather can be noticeably slower. Parking in a garage helps.
  • DC fast charging taper. Above approximately 80% state of charge, DC fast charging speed drops significantly. This is normal battery protection behavior. If you need speed, charge to 80% and move on.

Managing a team of drivers?

From Finn, engineer: Timer and schedule charging confusion is one of the most common issues we see in the EVcourse app. Drivers plug in expecting to charge, and the car silently waits for a time window they forgot they set. It is not intuitive, especially on the MG ZS EV where the timer setting is buried a few menus deep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my MG ZS EV only charge at certain times?

Your MG ZS EV likely has a charging timer or schedule active. Go to Settings, then Charging, and check if a timer is set. If the car is set to charge only between midnight and 6 AM, it will not start charging when you plug in at 8 PM. Disable the timer or adjust the window to fix this.

What do the charge port lights on the MG ZS EV mean?

A steady green light means charging is complete or nearly full. A flashing green light means the car is actively charging. An amber or orange light means the car is plugged in but not charging, usually because of a timer setting or a fault. A red light or no light at all means there is a connection problem or a fault that needs attention.

When should I contact MG about a charging problem?

Contact MG or your dealer if the charge port light stays red, if the car will not charge at any station even with timers off, if the onboard charger makes unusual clicking or buzzing sounds, or if charging stops repeatedly at the same low percentage. These could indicate a hardware fault with the onboard charger module.

Can I use any Type 2 charger with the MG ZS EV?

Yes. The MG ZS EV uses a standard CCS connector for DC fast charging and a Type 2 connector for AC charging. Any public or home charger with these connectors should work. If a specific charger does not start, the problem is usually the charger or a timer setting in the car, not a compatibility issue.
