All Chargers Are Occupied

Every stall is taken and you need to charge

You arrived at a charging station and all stalls are in use. Waiting can be unpredictable. Here is how to decide whether to wait or find an alternative.

Your situation

Tom

You need to charge but all stalls at the station are occupied by other vehicles. Some may be actively charging, others may be finished but still plugged in.

What to try first

  1. 1

Check how long the other cars have been charging

Some charger apps show session duration for occupied stalls. A car that has been charging for 40+ minutes on a DC fast charger is likely nearly done. One that just started may be there for 30 minutes or more.

  2. 2

    Check for nearby alternatives

While you wait, search for other chargers within range. A less popular station 5 minutes away may be completely empty. Hotel and shopping center chargers are often overlooked.

  3. 3

    Use the time productively

If you decide to wait, use the time to plan your next stop, get food, or check other stations. Do not idle your car while waiting as this drains the battery you need for charging.

Frequently asked questions

How long do people usually charge at a fast charger?

On a DC fast charger, most sessions take 20-40 minutes. Drivers typically charge to 80% and leave. On a slower AC charger, a full charge can take several hours. If a car is still plugged in but not actively charging, the driver may have forgotten. Some networks charge idle fees to discourage this.

Is it rude to unplug someone else's car?

If the car has finished charging (the charger shows the session is complete), it is generally acceptable to unplug the connector and use the stall. Never unplug a car that is actively charging. Some EV communities consider it acceptable to move a finished connector, but practices vary by region.
