What does MSP (Mobility Service Provider) mean?

Updated March 2026

Share

Short answer: Another term for eMSP, the company that provides your charging account, app, or card for accessing multiple charging networks.

Explanation

MSP and eMSP are used interchangeably in the EV charging industry. Both refer to the company that gives you access to charging infrastructure through an account, app, or RFID card. The 'e' in eMSP stands for 'e-mobility,' but many industry participants simply say MSP.

Your MSP is the company you pay. They handle your subscription (if any), provide your charging card, show you charger locations and pricing in their app, and send you invoices. When you charge at a station operated by a different company, your MSP routes the payment through a roaming platform.

Choosing the right MSP depends on your charging habits. Look at which networks are most common along your regular routes, compare roaming markups, check if there are monthly fees, and read reviews about billing transparency. Many drivers use two or three MSP accounts to get the best rates across different networks.

Common confusion

MSP and eMSP mean the same thing. Some documents use one, some use the other. If you see either term, it refers to your charging service provider, not the company that owns the physical charger.
