What does eMSP (e-Mobility Service Provider) mean?

Updated March 2026

Share

Short answer: A company that provides EV drivers with access to charging networks through a card, app, or account, handling payment and roaming.

Explanation

An e-Mobility Service Provider is the company you have a charging account with. They provide you with an app, RFID card, or both, and handle authentication and billing when you charge. Think of an eMSP like a mobile phone provider: you sign up with one company, and they give you access to many networks through roaming agreements.

Examples of eMSPs include Shell Recharge, Plugsurfing, Chargemap, and EnBW mobility+. Each one has different pricing, different roaming agreements, and different coverage strengths. Some offer flat-rate pricing regardless of which network's charger you use. Others pass through the CPO's price with a markup.

Choosing the right eMSP depends on which charging networks are most common in your area, how transparently they show pricing, and whether their roaming coverage matches the routes you drive. Many drivers carry two or three eMSP cards to get the best price at different networks. This complexity is gradually improving as eRoaming becomes more standardized.

Common confusion

People often confuse eMSPs with CPOs. The CPO owns and operates the physical charger. The eMSP is the service you use to access and pay for charging. Sometimes one company does both (like Shell Recharge), which adds to the confusion.

Example

Plugsurfing is an eMSP that gives you one card to charge across networks like Ionity, Allego, and Vattenfall, with pricing shown in their app before you start.
