What does Charge Port Light mean?

Updated March 2026

Share

Explanation

Most EVs have LED lights built into or around the charge port that indicate the current charging status through colors and blinking patterns. While the exact color scheme varies by manufacturer, the general pattern is similar: a solid or pulsing color during active charging, a different color when charging is complete, and a blinking or red color if there is an error.

Common patterns include green pulsing for active charging, solid green for charging complete, and red or amber for an error. Tesla uses a green flowing light during charging and solid green when complete. Volkswagen ID models use a pulsing green ring. BMW uses a blue pulsing light during charging.

The charge port light is one of the quickest ways to check charging status from outside the car without opening the door or checking an app. If you walk past your parked car and see the right color, you know charging is progressing normally. If you see an error color, you can investigate before losing too much time.

Common confusion

Each manufacturer uses slightly different colors and patterns. A blue light means 'charging' on one brand and 'error' on another. Check your car's manual for the specific meanings of each color.

Example

On a Volkswagen ID.4, a green pulsing ring around the charge port means charging is active. A solid green ring means the battery has reached the charge limit. A red ring indicates an error.
