What does CCS1 (CCS Combo 1) mean?

Updated March 2026

Share

Short answer: The DC fast charging connector standard used in North America, combining a Type 1 (J1772) AC connector with DC pins.

Explanation

CCS1, also called CCS Combo 1, is the DC fast charging connector standard used in the United States, Canada, and some other markets. It combines the Type 1 (J1772) AC connector shape with two additional DC pins at the bottom, similar to how CCS2 combines Type 2 with DC pins in Europe.

If you drive in Europe, you will not encounter CCS1 connectors. European EVs use CCS2 exclusively. CCS1 is relevant primarily for understanding global charging standards and for travelers who might rent EVs in North America.

CCS1 is gradually being superseded by NACS (Tesla's connector) in North America, as most major automakers have committed to adopting NACS starting from 2025. Some new North American charger installations now include both CCS1 and NACS connectors to support all vehicles during the transition period.

Common confusion

CCS1 and CCS2 are not interchangeable. CCS1 uses the Type 1 (J1772) shape common in North America. CCS2 uses the Type 2 (Mennekes) shape common in Europe. They are physically incompatible without an adapter.

Example

A Chevrolet Bolt in North America uses CCS1 for DC fast charging. If the same car were sold in Europe, it would use CCS2 instead.
