BMW i4 Not Charging at Home? What the Orange Light Means

Updated March 2026

Your BMW i4 is plugged into the home wallbox, but the charge port is glowing solid orange instead of blue. A solid orange light on the BMW i4 means the car is connected but not actively charging. This is usually caused by a departure timer, a charge limit, or a communication issue with your home charger. Here is how to diagnose and fix it.

Troubleshooting steps are general guidance. Actual behavior varies by model year, software version, and charger hardware. Always follow your vehicle's manual and the instructions on the charger display. EVcourse is not affiliated with any vehicle manufacturer.

Quick Fix

  1. Check departure timer. Open iDrive > Charging > Charging Preferences. If a departure time is set, the car delays charging to finish at that time. Disable it or set it to "Charge immediately."
  2. Check charge limit. If the battery is already at or above your set limit (for example, 80%), the car will not charge further. Raise the limit temporarily if you need a full charge.
  3. Unplug, lock the car, wait 30 seconds, unlock, and replug. This resets the charging communication between the car and wallbox.

What Does the Orange Charging Light Mean on a BMW i4?

The BMW i4 uses three charge port light colors: blue (actively charging), green (charging complete), and orange (connected but not charging). Orange does not mean something is broken. It means the car has decided not to charge right now.

The most common reason is BMW's departure timer. Unlike simpler EVs that start charging the moment you plug in, the BMW i4 defaults to smart charging behavior. It calculates when to start based on your set departure time, current battery level, and charge rate. If you set a departure time of 7:00 AM and plug in at 9:00 PM, the car may wait until 2:00 AM to start.

You can also see the orange light if the car's charge limit is set to a specific percentage and the battery is already at or above that number. Check both settings in iDrive or the My BMW app on your phone.

BMW i4 Not Charging from Home Wallbox

If the departure timer is off and the charge limit is high enough, the issue may be with your wallbox or home electrical supply.

  • Wallbox error indicators. Check the wallbox itself for error LEDs. A red or flashing indicator on the wallbox means the charger has a fault, not the car. Many wallboxes have their own app or status display.
  • RCD tripping. The BMW i4's onboard charger draws significant current. If your home's residual current device (RCD) trips when charging starts, it may indicate an earthing issue or that the RCD is not rated for EV charging (Type A instead of Type B). An electrician should check this.
  • Reduced home current. If other high-draw appliances are running (oven, heat pump, dryer), dynamic load management on some wallboxes may reduce or pause EV charging. Check if the wallbox has load balancing enabled.
  • Cable not fully seated. The Type 2 connector must click into both the wallbox and the car's port. A loose connection on either end can prevent charging from starting.

When Should You Contact BMW?

If the car will not charge at any charger, including public AC and DC stations, it is time to contact BMW. A single wallbox refusing to work could be the wallbox. Every charger refusing to work is likely the car.

Watch for these warning signs in the iDrive system: "High-voltage charging system malfunction," "Drivetrain malfunction," or a persistent red charge port light. These suggest a hardware issue with the onboard charger or high-voltage system.

Also check if a software update is available. BMW regularly pushes over-the-air updates that can fix charging bugs. Go to iDrive > Settings > Software Update, or check the My BMW app.

From Finn, engineer: Dashboard light confusion is a top reason drivers scan with the EVcourse app. The BMW i4's orange light looks alarming, but it almost always means the car is waiting, not broken. Departure timers are the number one cause, and they catch experienced EV owners just as often as new ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the orange charging light mean on a BMW i4?

A solid orange light on the BMW i4 charge port means the car is connected but not actively charging. This can mean a timer is active, the car has reached its charge limit, or there is a communication issue between the car and the wallbox. Check charging settings in the iDrive system or the My BMW app.

Is my home wallbox compatible with the BMW i4?

The BMW i4 uses a standard Type 2 connector for AC charging and CCS for DC fast charging. Any Type 2 wallbox should be compatible. If the wallbox does not start charging, check that it is rated for at least 16A and that your home electrical supply can handle the load. Some older wallboxes may need a firmware update for newer vehicles.

Do BMW software updates affect charging?

Yes. BMW pushes over-the-air updates that can change charging behavior, including timer settings and charge limits. After an update, check your charging preferences in iDrive. Some owners report that updates reset the departure time or charge limit to defaults.

When should I take my BMW i4 to the dealer for a charging issue?

Visit your BMW dealer if the charge port light stays red, if the car will not charge at any charger even with timers disabled, if you see a drivetrain malfunction warning alongside charging failure, or if the high-voltage charging system warning appears in iDrive. These may indicate a hardware fault.
