Kempower Charger Not Working?

Updated March 2026

Kempower builds high-power charging systems with a distinctive satellite architecture. One power unit can serve multiple charging cables, dynamically distributing up to 400 kW. Kempower also operates some stations directly. Payment works via RFID or app. Here are the most common issues you may encounter.

Satellite power sharing reduces your charging speed

Kempower uses a centralized power unit that distributes energy across multiple satellite cables. When several cars charge simultaneously, the available power is split dynamically. Your speed depends on how many other vehicles are drawing power.

Symptoms

  • Charging starts fast but drops sharply when another car plugs in at the same station
  • Dashboard shows 80 kW at a station rated for 400 kW
  • Speed fluctuates noticeably during the session without any change to your battery level
  • Different visits to the same station yield very different charging speeds

How to Fix It

  1. 1

    Check the power unit display

Kempower stations typically have a display on the main power unit showing how power is allocated across all active satellites. This tells you exactly how much capacity is available for your connector.

  2. 2

Choose a satellite on a less busy power unit

Some Kempower installations have multiple power units. If you see two separate cabinets, the satellites connected to the less-used one will have more power available. Look at which cables come from which cabinet.

  3. 3

Charge during off-peak times if speed matters

Early morning or late evening means fewer simultaneous users. If you need maximum speed, avoid peak commute hours when multiple vehicles compete for the same power unit.

  4. 4

Understand that dynamic allocation is normal

This is how Kempower is designed to work. The system prioritizes vehicles that can accept the most power. As other cars finish or slow down, your allocation may increase automatically. Check the display periodically.

Third-party RFID card not accepted

You tap your RFID card from another charging network and the Kempower station does not recognize it. Not all roaming agreements cover every Kempower installation.

Symptoms

  • RFID reader beeps but shows 'Card not recognized'
  • Card works at other networks but fails at this Kempower station
  • No error message, the reader just does nothing after the tap
  • Station is new and your usual roaming card has not been added yet

How to Fix It

  1. 1

    Check who operates the station

Kempower manufactures the hardware, but the station may be operated by a different company. The operator determines which RFID cards are accepted. Look for the operator name on the charger or signage.

  2. 2

    Try the operator's own app

If your roaming RFID does not work, download the operator's app and create an account. Direct access through the operator usually works even when roaming does not.

  3. 3

Try a different RFID card if you carry one

Different roaming networks have different coverage. If you have a second charging card (Shell Recharge, Plugsurfing, Chargemap), try that one.

  4. 4

Check if the station accepts contactless card payment

Some newer Kempower installations support direct contactless bank card payment. Look for a card reader with the contactless symbol near the satellite connector.

  5. 5

Report the issue to your RFID provider

If the station should accept your card based on your provider's coverage map, let them know. Roaming gaps are often fixed by adding the station to the provider's database.

Vehicle limits charging speed despite high charger output

Kempower can deliver up to 400 kW, but your vehicle's battery management system determines how much power it actually accepts. Many EVs cannot take more than 100 to 200 kW, and the car itself throttles the speed.

Symptoms

  • Dashboard shows 100 to 150 kW at a 400 kW charger
  • Charging speed is identical to what you get at a 150 kW charger
  • Speed drops steeply after 50% state of charge
  • Vehicle displays a battery temperature warning and reduces charging speed

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Check your vehicle's maximum DC charging rate

Look up your specific model's peak DC charging speed. Popular EVs range from 50 kW to 270 kW. The Kempower station will deliver only what your car requests, regardless of the station's maximum rating.

  2. 2

Precondition your battery if your vehicle supports it

Set the Kempower station as your navigation destination. Many modern EVs will warm the battery during the drive, which allows higher charging speeds on arrival.

  3. 3

Arrive with a lower state of charge for faster charging

Most vehicles accept the highest power between 10% and 40% state of charge. Arriving at 5% to 15% gives you the longest window of fast charging before the car starts to taper.

  4. 4

Do not mistake vehicle limits for charger problems

If your car maxes out at 135 kW, it will charge at 135 kW whether the station offers 200 kW or 400 kW. The extra station capacity benefits vehicles that can use it, not every vehicle.

Display showing power allocation is confusing

Kempower's main power unit has a display that shows how energy is distributed across all active satellites. If you are not familiar with the layout, it can be hard to understand which number applies to your connector.

Symptoms

  • Power unit display shows multiple power readings and you do not know which is yours
  • Numbers on the display change rapidly as other vehicles plug in or out
  • Display shows total station power but not your individual allocation
  • You cannot find the display or it is on the back of the power unit

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Match your satellite number to the display

Each Kempower satellite (the unit where you plug in) has a number. Find your satellite number and match it to the corresponding line on the power unit display.

  2. 2

    Check your vehicle's dashboard instead

Your car's charging screen shows exactly how much power you are receiving. This is always accurate and does not require understanding the Kempower display layout.

  3. 3

Use the operator's app for session details

If the station operator has an app, it usually shows your current charging power, energy delivered, and estimated time remaining. This is often easier to read than the hardware display.

  4. 4

    Understand the dynamic allocation concept

Kempower distributes power where it is needed most. If your car is at 70% and another car just plugged in at 10%, the system may temporarily shift more power to the other car. This is normal and your allocation will adjust as conditions change.

New station not visible in navigation or charging apps

Kempower is expanding rapidly and new stations may not appear in all navigation systems or third-party charging apps for weeks after going live.

Symptoms

  • You see a Kempower station physically but it does not appear in your car's navigation
  • Charging apps show no station at this location
  • Google Maps or Apple Maps does not list the station
  • The station is operational but has zero reviews or check-ins online

How to Fix It

  1. 1

    Try the station anyway

A station being absent from apps does not mean it is not working. Walk up to it, check the display, and try to start a session. New stations often work before they are listed online.

  2. 2

Check the operator's own app or website

The company operating the station usually lists it on their platform first. Third-party apps and navigation systems update from aggregated databases that can lag by days or weeks.

  3. 3

Add the station to Open Charge Map

Open Charge Map is a community database that feeds many charging apps. Adding the station there helps it appear in third-party apps faster.

  4. 4

Use the physical address for navigation

If the station is not in your EV navigation, just navigate to the street address. You can find this on the operator's website or by noting the location when you first spot the charger.

Kempower App Tips

  • Kempower stations are often operated by other companies. The app you need is the operator's app, not necessarily a Kempower app. Check the signage at the station.
  • Before a long trip, check the operator's app for real-time availability. New Kempower stations may not appear in third-party apps yet.
  • If the station has multiple power units, the app may show which satellites are on which unit. Use this to pick a less busy unit for more power.
  • Report new Kempower stations to Open Charge Map or your preferred charging app to help other drivers find them.

Payment Troubleshooting

  • RFID cards from major roaming networks (Hubject, Gireve) generally work at Kempower stations, but coverage depends on the station operator.
  • If your RFID card fails, try the operator's direct app or contactless bank card payment if available at that station.
  • Pricing at Kempower stations is set by the operator, not by Kempower. Rates can vary significantly between different operators using Kempower hardware.
  • Some Kempower stations at commercial locations (logistics centers, company sites) may be restricted to authorized users only. Check before you plan a stop.

When to Contact Kempower Support

Contact the station operator for charging issues, not Kempower directly (unless Kempower operates the station). The operator's name and support number are printed on the charger or signage. For Kempower-operated stations, use the contact information displayed on the power unit or satellite. For RFID roaming issues, contact your RFID card provider to check if the station is in their coverage network.

You can also report charger issues through the Kempower app. Reporting helps them fix problems faster.
