What does Regen (Regenerative Braking) mean?

Updated March 2026

Share

Short answer: Your EV's ability to recover energy when you slow down or brake, converting motion back into electricity stored in the battery.

Explanation

Regenerative braking, or regen, is one of the unique advantages of driving an EV. When you lift your foot off the accelerator, the electric motor reverses its role and acts as a generator, converting the car's forward motion back into electrical energy. This energy flows back into the battery, extending your range.

You can see regen happening on your car's dashboard. Most EVs show a power flow diagram or a gauge that indicates when energy is being recovered. The car slows down noticeably when regen is active, which many drivers call "one-pedal driving" because you can control speed with just the accelerator in most situations.

Many EVs let you adjust the regen intensity through paddle shifters, a drive mode selector, or the infotainment system. Higher regen means stronger deceleration when you lift off the accelerator and more energy recovery. Lower regen feels more like a traditional car coasting. Experiment to find what feels comfortable. In city driving with frequent stops, strong regen can recover a meaningful amount of energy, sometimes adding 10-20% more range compared to driving with regen off.

Common confusion

Some drivers think regen can fully recharge the battery. It cannot. Regen recovers a portion of the energy used to accelerate and climb hills, but it does not create free energy. Regen helps extend range, not replace charging.

Example

Driving a Hyundai Kona Electric in heavy city traffic with maximum regen can reduce energy consumption from about 180 Wh/km to 140 Wh/km, noticeably extending range.
