What does Range Mode mean?

Updated March 2026

Share

Short answer: A vehicle setting that reduces energy consumption by limiting climate control, seat heating, and other accessories to maximize driving range.

Explanation

Range mode is a setting found on some EVs that prioritizes battery range over comfort. When activated, it typically reduces heating and cooling power, limits seat heater intensity, dims the screen, and may restrict top speed or acceleration. The goal is to squeeze as many kilometers as possible from the remaining battery charge.

Range mode is most useful when you are running low on charge and need to reach the next charger. It can add 5-15% more range compared to normal driving by cutting energy consumption from non-essential systems. The cabin might be cooler in winter or warmer in summer, but you get farther on the energy you have.

Not all manufacturers call it 'range mode.' Tesla and Rivian use this name. Others might call it 'eco+' or simply integrate range-extending features into their eco mode. The effect is similar across brands: reduce accessory power consumption to extend range.

Common confusion

Range mode and eco mode are not the same on all cars. Eco mode typically adjusts throttle response and regen for efficient driving. Range mode goes further by restricting climate control and other accessories.

Example

Activating range mode on a Tesla Model 3 in winter limits the cabin heater and disables seat heating, potentially extending range from 280 km to 310 km on the remaining charge.
