Prices change frequently. Check the network's app or website before your trip. Most networks charge more for contactless payment than for in-app payment.

Which UK Charging Memberships Are Worth It?

Memberships save money if you charge at the same network regularly, but most drivers are better off using 2 to 3 networks without a subscription. Here is what each membership costs and what you get.

  • GRIDSERVE Plus (£7.99/month): 25% off contactless pricing on the first 208 kWh per month. Worth it if you regularly charge on the GRIDSERVE Electric Highway, especially on motorway trips.
  • bp pulse subscription (£7.85/month): Significantly cheaper per-kWh rates across all speed tiers. First month free. Good value if bp pulse chargers are on your regular route.
  • Be.EV Mini (£4.99/month) or Mega (£9.99/month): Off-peak ultra-rapid rates as low as 39p/kWh for members. The cheapest rapid charging available in the UK if you charge during off-peak hours in Be.EV's northern England coverage area.
  • Ionity Power (£10.50/month): Drops per-kWh rate to approximately 46p. Only worth it if Ionity's 58 UK locations are convenient for your motorway routes.
  • Shell Recharge subscription (£9.99/month): 30% off app pricing up to 1,000 kWh per month. Useful if you rely on Shell Recharge rapid chargers or ubitricity on-street chargers.
  • No subscription needed: Osprey, MFG EV Power, InstaVolt, and Pod Point have no monthly fee. Osprey's app saves 5p/kWh versus contactless. MFG has no price difference between app and contactless.

Do You Need an App to Charge in the UK?

No. UK regulations now require contactless bank card payment on all new public chargers rated 8 kW and above, and on all existing chargers rated 50 kW and above. You can tap your debit or credit card and start charging without downloading anything.

That said, most networks charge more for contactless than for in-app payment. Osprey charges 5p/kWh more. bp pulse charges up to 20p/kWh more. Shell Recharge charges 10p/kWh more. If you charge regularly, downloading the app for your most-used network will save money over time.

For occasional use or when you are at an unfamiliar charger, contactless is the simplest option. No account, no app, no waiting for a verification email at the side of the road.

Best UK Charging Network for Your Situation

  • Motorway road trips: GRIDSERVE has the widest motorway coverage (85% of the UK motorway network). MFG EV Power covers 170+ forecourt hubs. Both have ultra-rapid chargers and accept contactless.
  • Daily commute without home charging: Be.EV off-peak rates (39p/kWh for members) are hard to beat if you charge evenings or early mornings. InstaVolt off-peak (60p/kWh) is available nationwide.
  • Tesla owners: Tesla Supercharger is the cheapest option by far, averaging approximately 23p/kWh. Open to non-Tesla drivers at higher rates.
  • Weekly supermarket shop: Pod Point at Tesco (44p/kWh for 7 kW) lets you charge while you shop. Slower than a rapid charger, but you are parked anyway.
  • On-street/overnight parking: Shell Recharge ubitricity (14,000+ lamppost chargers) is the largest on-street network. Rates start at approximately 54p/kWh via the app.
  • Maximum speed: Fastned (up to 400 kW) or GRIDSERVE/Ionity (up to 350 kW) for the fastest possible sessions. Your car's max speed is usually the bottleneck.

How Does Public Charging Compare to Home Charging?

Home charging is roughly three times cheaper than public rapid charging in the UK. The Ofgem price cap for Q1 2026 is 27.69p/kWh, dropping to 24.67p/kWh from April 2026. Public rapid charging averages 69p to 89p/kWh depending on the network.

For a typical electric car with a 60 kWh battery, charging from 10% to 80% at home costs approximately £11 to £14. The same charge at a public rapid charger costs approximately £29 to £37. Over a year, that difference adds up to hundreds of pounds.

If you have off-street parking, a home charger is the single best investment for reducing running costs. If you rely entirely on public charging, choosing the right network and charging off-peak where available makes a meaningful difference.

UK Roaming Cards: One Card, Multiple Networks

Roaming cards let you charge on multiple networks with one account, but you usually pay a premium for the convenience. The main UK roaming options are:

  • Octopus Electroverse: Covers 700,000+ chargers across Europe including most UK networks. Single app and account. Pricing varies by network but is clearly shown before you start.
  • Shell Recharge card: Works at Shell Recharge stations plus roaming partners. 10p/kWh cheaper than contactless at Shell stations.
  • bp pulse: Works at bp pulse stations plus roaming partners across Europe.

For most UK drivers, having the free apps for GRIDSERVE, Osprey, and one other regular network covers most situations without paying roaming premiums.

Confused by the Charger Screen?

Every network has a different screen layout, different error messages, and different payment flows. When the charger shows something you do not understand, point your phone at the screen. The EVcourse app reads the display and explains what to do next, regardless of which network you are using.

From Finn, EV specialist: UK charging has improved dramatically. Two years ago, contactless payment was rare and reliability was patchy. In 2026, every major rapid network accepts contactless, and competition is pushing prices down at off-peak times. The biggest savings come from picking 2 to 3 networks that match your regular routes and using their apps instead of contactless.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest electric car charging network in the UK?

Tesla Supercharger is the cheapest for Tesla owners, averaging approximately 23.5p/kWh. For non-Tesla drivers, MFG EV Power (69p to 79p/kWh) and Be.EV off-peak (39p/kWh for members) offer some of the lowest rapid charging rates. Pod Point at Tesco is 44p/kWh for 7 kW charging. Prices vary by location and time of day.

What is the fastest charging network in the UK?

GRIDSERVE and Ionity both offer chargers rated up to 350 kW. Fastned goes up to 400 kW at some locations. MFG EV Power, Osprey, and Be.EV offer up to 300 kW. Your car's maximum charging speed is usually the limiting factor, not the charger.

Do I need an app to charge at UK public chargers?

Not always. UK regulations require contactless bank card payment on all new public chargers rated 8 kW and above (installed after November 2024) and on all existing chargers rated 50 kW and above. Many networks still offer lower prices through their app compared to contactless payment.

Which UK charging network has the most chargers?

Shell Recharge (including ubitricity on-street chargers) has the largest footprint with over 14,000 chargers. Pod Point has approximately 8,200 chargers across the UK. For rapid and ultra-rapid charging specifically, GRIDSERVE (approximately 2,000 chargers) and InstaVolt (approximately 2,100 chargers) have the widest motorway and forecourt coverage.

Is it cheaper to charge an electric car at home in the UK?

Yes, significantly. Home charging on the Ofgem price cap costs approximately 25p to 28p/kWh, while public rapid charging costs 69p to 89p/kWh at most networks. Charging at home overnight is roughly three times cheaper than using a public rapid charger.
